At the end of the summer my motor started turning over slowly again even after upgrading the positive and negative cables, so I thought over the winter I would check the motor and solenoid, is this something you can do yourself or is it a job for a specialist?

For the cost of a new one I'd just replace it.

I fitted a "Global Power" brand starter motor more than four years ago, my engine cranked super fast from day one and remains exactly the same today.

You'll need to call Island 4x4 who sell the "Global Power" brand starters as I can't see the exact model you need on their website any more, but I'm sure they'll have one on the shelf if you contact them, ask for a starter for your Land Rover Discovery 1 with a four litre V8 and you'll get the right one.

You should pay £49.99 excl VAT for a Global Power Disco 1 V8 starter motor, island-4x4 offer free delivery but only if your order totals £50.00 excl VAT, so this is where you need to play the game to your advantage.

I recommend buying one H4 bulb which is always something good to keep in your Chimaera as a spare, at £1.25 excl VAT this will push your order to £51.24 qualifying you for the free delivery.

The way to look at it is your free delivered Global Power starter motor will have cost you just £61.49 including VAT, and you also get a free spare H4 bulb in the deal.

Bargain wink

Had same problem with mine on 450.

Stripped motor to find nothing amiss BUT the culprit was the solenoid, drawing excessive current due to corroded and rotted terminals.
One new end cap and bit later problem solved.
Just used the local starter motor repairers.

Also added relay to the system to reduce the load on the immobilser and increase voltage to solenoid.

I bought a new one as per CoG recommendation above but I still also took the old one apart (it was sort of working...) and cleaned up the internals - it was quite easy. I noticed the solenoid connections were quite grubby which probably explained the 'click' I was getting on a non-start - cleaned up I bet it is OK now. I've kept the old one as a spare which could come in handy one of these days.

Thanks COG, I will give them a call, I was thinking about doing it myself because a quick search on the web was showing £200 - £300 from the TVR specialists

Thanks for the info green hulk, that saves me a call, I will try my local Land Rover indie and see what they have to offer, if it's interesting I will let you know
