Master cylinder.

Anyone know if the master cylinder on a 1993 4 litre Chimaera is a part that can be purchased from Fords and fitted without any mods.
I know that some bits were modified by TVR to fit.

I don't think it is a ford part, as i cant think of any Fords that have hydraulic clutches? (maybe im just a numpty?)

I was quoted between 50 - 60 quid for a master cylinder from two different TVR dealers so there not too expensive.

Although i ended up just changing the seals in mine for the sum of 8 quid and all is now ok.


Eddited to add: Just thought ! You didnt mention if it was the brake or clutch ? if your talking about the brake I beleive it is a ford part but i dont know what its from (and ignor my other comment).

ajb, where did you get the seals from for your clutch master cylender, mines weeping and it runs down the clutch pedal... what seal kit is it?

My brother got them from Cafco (he's a mechanic), but you should be able to get the kit from any motorfactor place. I asked a few TVR dealers and none of them could get it so i asked my brother to look in to it.

The part number is : Lucas, girling SP2102.

It's a simple procedure and can easily be done in a day.

The clutch master cylinder is a girling unit and I ordered one using the numbers cast on the side of the reservoir. However when it came to fitting it I found that the hydraulic connection was too small. I assume the unit was re-engineered to improve performance by taking the threaded hole up one size and increasing the hole size into the piston area. Luckily a toolmaker in work copied the modifications for me otherwise altering the pipework may have proved difficult/ expensive. I think I had to swap the push rod over as it was different.

P.S. search the internet for the part as I got a unit delivered for £37 with local motor factors quoting £110+

hi guys,

the post was a great help to me who was suffering from an intermittant "long" clutch pedal, changing the fluid and bleeding helped for a bit, but the problem came back.. the master Cylinder is actually a Triumph TR6 part so spares are readily available. The seal kit is part number SP2102,or 18G8986 for the 0.70" bore cylinder and it is £7.50.from www.Moss-europe.co.uk or www.powertrackbrakes.co.uk . Just had mine done and it is perfect and the clutch is smoother and not as heavy. My local TVR specialist in Middlewich, Cheshire changed the seals and only charged me £40 which i think is a bargain. the Chim is now 100% ready for this weeks jaunt to Lemans!.. cant wait..
