Help - Over charging

Hi

Need some help. I noticed a problem with my car when I drove it with the lights on. The interior light, dash lights and head lights vary in intensity.

I thought this would be the alternator so today I took it off and took it to a specialist who can't find anything wrong with it/with the voltage regulator.

He has suggested that the problem could be the battery or a loose earth.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

How old is the battery?

Might be worth checking the alternator fuse under the car(poor connection?).
Failing that, you could try connecting a separate earth direct to the alternator to see if that cures the problem.

Panic over.

While the guy had the alternator stripped down in his workshop he re-soldered all the connections and tightened a loose nut on the main power lead but couldn't find anything secific wrong. Can only assume that he fixed the problem without knowing.

He had to strip the alternator down a couple of months ago as the bearings had worn and were making a noise. There must have been something loose in there somewhere from the last time he worked on it.

Phew, have the car running again for the weekend
