Hey folks, I'll be giving my 450 an oil service shortly and just wondered if it's worth fitting a baffled sump to it at the same time?
I'm planning on getting back into track days this year and being as it'll be my first experience with our cars on track I was wondering if a baffled sump might be a good preventative measure, or is it totally unnecessary if I'm running on road rubber, albeit track biased stuff?

Track days are similar to racing conditions with lots of G force sending oil places it doesn't normally go and sometimes the oil pickup pipe is left hanging with no oil to pickup. So I'd call a Chimaera Racer and see what they have to say about it.
Call Mike Luck at DG Sportscars, Redditch, he races Chim's in the Dunlop TVR Challenge and also sells race parts including Dry and Baffled sumps I believe.

Ok, great stuff. I did come across MULFAB a company in Warwickshire, I don't know if anyone have come across them before?

I have a Mulfab baffled sump on my car. (Mulberry Fabrications). I do track days and was worried about oil surge issues.
I went for the extended version, which increased the sump capacity to about 9 litres as well as baffling it.
My friend Mat Smith then made his own version for his race car, where he races with Mike Luck.

www.mulfab.co.uk

A friend of mine who does track events in his LS3 Tamora, which was fitted with a standard sump, actually blew a hole in the side of the engine through oil starvation, so it is a lot more than a myth.

I made both the batches of baffled sumps for the Pistonheads Group buy, when I worked at Mulfab. I left there a little over a year ago, and have set up by myself offering similar services.

I currently make the sumps for DG and JED wink

It's a minefield smile I bottled it and stayed with standard oil capacity which now seems nuts but I'm still very happy with mine.

Your engines year etc is important when ordering as you know Simon smile

Looking MULFAB site, what sump do you recommend? Windage extra capacity? What are those wings for exactly?

Wings give the extra capacity without adding depth (ie reducing ground clearance).

Hi Simon, so what would an extended capacity windage sump cost from yourself? with wings maybe?

Whilst I am quoting you don't quote me!! But, I 'think' the JOHN Eales sumps come from Mulfab or at least copy their design, and JE ones are a bit more expensive. I run a Rover V8 in a different car to a TVR and ordered the non-winged baffled Sump. It turned out to be identical to a friends MulFab one. Both however worked just as well and eliminated oil surge in the 3.9L race engines they were used in.
Some guys I know are using the winged baffled sumps but these cars are pushing out north of 400 BHP, if that's the level you are at they be worthwhile, if not think the standard ones would work sufficiently well.
Hope that helps

...that's probably perfect for me. I'm only looking to add that bit of a safety net when on the track.

For just occasional use, I wouldn't recommend going the whole winged route. A "standard" baffled sump as I made for the group buys will be fine.

What capacity is the engine?

For the 4+ litre engines I weld in extra clearance to the front of the sump for the crank throw, rather than belting it with a hammer like the TVR factory did.

Yes we used to make the sumps for JED at Mulfab, and I continue to do so
