Any tips on a DIY set up for pressing the pins through the rods without damaging the piston?
Do I need to buy a decent press stand?

You need a support between the rod end and inside of the piston boss. Then you need something suitable to support the outside of the boss.

The interference is only .001" or so. Once they pins move, keep them moving. A safer way would be a threaded bar and lock nuts similar to the original factory tooling. You could hold it in your hands whilst screwing hard!

I would take them to an engineering company and give them a few quid and get the job done properly.

In my opinion, it isn't worth risking the possibility of damaging them without the correct equipment.

If you wanna pop by, I have a press in the garage wink

Bench press on order.
I hope to fashion a suitable tool and will practice on some old pistons I have.

By getting the assemblies warm the aluminium will expand more than the steel and help removal.thumbup

not the ally I am needing expanding tho. Its the interference fit of the little end of the con rod onto the gudgeon pin that needs pressing. Granted heating the rod end and freezing the pins will make reassembly easier.

Warm the small end with a paint stripper gun and providing the piston is supported sensibly those pins press straight out no problem, get a feel for your press though Derek even when fitted with a gauge scratchchin most important this bit .... you can sense issues before forcing anything with feel IMO I did all my adjustable push-rods ends this way that gives you an idea how versatile a press is if you get the feel
