I`m trying to trace a whine that is at the back of the car, it doesn`t start straight away, but gets worse when things warm up. I`m thinking wheel bearing or diff, the diff drain bolt is fubared and I`ve tried welding a nut over it, no luck there as when I apply torque the nut gives way. I want to change the diff oil so it might be diff out to get at the drain bolt
. I`ve checked the wheel bearings and they appear fine, also checked diff backlash and that is good. Anyone got any further ideas as to what could cause the noise, thanks in advance.

If you're careful you can drill out the diff drain plug (I had to). Replace using several options, I plumped for the Clever Trevor (probably overpriced) bit well made, nice fit cap head bolt type.
i`ve already got the rear exhaust mount off, so drilling is my next choice, I`ve got cobalt drills and a good snap on extractor, hope i can get in there.Drive the car around until it is all warmed up nicely. Jack up the rear safely and chock the fronts. Start the engine, put it in 3rd or 4th gear and let the clutch out slowly. The wheels (or at least one of them) will start spinning. You can use a long handled screwdriver pressed against your ear and place the tip against the front of the diff housing - not rotating parts! Any bearing wear will be magnified along the screwdriver. Take a few soundings at the front input and at both outputs. If one wheel does not rotate, slow the moving one down with a block of wood or similar and the other will start up. Then check at each hub and you should find the noise location.

And this is from a pro. N7GTX said:
Ha ha. You are the pro Al, you changed yours this week so you know all about them
If you'd seen the state of me,,, more like a bloke who works in a scrap yard
or a coal miner, grease s
t and grit in everywhere,,, my hairs almost white now,,, it was black for 8 hrs yesterday.
Truth is without the help of an experienced Tvr owner I'd still be doing it.
Almost tongue in cheek I said I'd rebuilt this car as much as was needed, didn't know I meant it.
Anybody got a new T5 gearbox lying about,,, that's the only bit left, that's got to need doing soon knowing my luck with Tvr.
So glad I did the Dif now though.

, but the whining is consistant
