Hi all, how would I be able to tell if heads I am looking at are 500 Big Valve Heads ? Are there any serial numbers on the castings or anything else to look for.
Dave
If they are off the car, measure the valves.Dave
I thought that all 500s have bigger valves than standard, but may be wrong
I had a 5 litre built for me by V8D a few years ago with their stage three heads on it.
My car was no quicker than a factory 5 litre, to my surprise, but then I read that the factory 5 litre had bigger valves and the penny dropped.
My valves were inlet 1.63 inches, exhaust 1.4 inches, so if yours are bigger then you have the correct big valves.

37 and 42 mm ring a bell!
Your heads sound like 4.6 Anthony!
My 4.6 2000 year car has those sizes I think!
Apparently the later 4.6 engines had those valves from stock as Rover were now fitting them so there's no work done on the heads at Tvr, no porting or anything. Still classed as big valve.
It will be very interesting if you can take measurements of yours Dave.
My engine does only produce about 300 Bhp Catted and that might indicate smaller valves/ ports than true 5.0 heads.
So if mine were never ported, were the 5.0 heads ported and matched to inlet manifold by Tvr.
