Took a trip down to Brighton to see my parents yesterday and temp was steady at 90 fast road and would not go below, usually 70/80 even on a warmish day. Then in traffic the gauge got up to just over 110!!! Now I know on rovergauge that it shows 88 when my gauge shows mid 90's but this strikes me as a bit excessive even though yesterday was bloody hot.

Anyone else experiencing a noticable change with the increase in ambient?

I could hear the fans on most of the time but I'm going to check that they are both coming on. What else temp sender/otter?

It didn't struggle to run showing that temp and I did pull over and let her cool down. No coolant loss either.

It is running with turbo so I doubt that helps.

I went out for a run yesterday with rovergauge in - was between 80-90 degrees whilst moving (usually around the middle of that) and went up to 95 whilst idling.
My fans seem to come on at about 92 I believe.

110 is a bit high - although the system is under 13psi pressure and won't boil until about 120. The fans should have brought it down to approx 90 and then come on and the temps would cycle between just under 100 and 90. Sounds like a slightly blocked radiator. Fans should not come on if travelling above 30mph.

I've just checked the fans and they both come on when the gauge is showing 88 so about 82 in reality which would seem right. I continued to run it until the fans stopped while stationary and they cut back out at around 90 on the gauge so around 84 if its still in reality the same margin between gauge and what rovergauge usually shows, which I doubt as it would not have cut the fans you would think?

Yesterday they just couldn't cope, the fans were on permanently and the temp was still rising.

Could be a rad, circulation issue but I had a new ally one fitted only a year ago with new pump and all cleaned out?

Normally in really heavy traffic it will go up to just over 100 on the gauge but never more and it always runs nice and cool on fast road...thats the more concerning thing! Probably the first time its been really hot ambient running with turbo though, so I've got nothing concrete to base it on really.

With ambient at 25 yesterday it would seem feasible that your cooling system is just about on its limits of ability to take heat out faster than the combustion process can create it.

Make sure the air can flow through the rad freely. ie clean the rad externally and flush internals too.

Mine always struggled when stationary in hot weather until I threw the knackered air con rad in the bin, a new radiator won't make much difference if it can't get airflow. Got air con?

Maybe an obvious question; Are your fans spinning in the correct direction, sucking cold air through the radiator fins, and blowing the hot air into the engine bay.

Yep when the roofs off for me smile

The intercooler does sit in front of the rad now...I might frisby the number plate and get one of the small ones made up or a sticky one if it helps.

Err....good question maybe I'll get some paper and see if it sucks or sticks.

Fans are both running but its always (without issue I might add) got hot quite quickly when sat in traffic but it does always max out at just over 100 normally so I feel somethings happening aside from an increase in ambient.

I'll check through everyones suggestions.

Cheers.

I'm driving in 32 degrees with aircon on and the temp stays at around 92.

Make sure your system is properly filled and bled and these cars are fine in hot weather.

Using the rover temp sender mod keeps you sane as the tvr one will never give you an accurate reading on the gauge, unless you want to drive around with rovergauge all the time.
