HELLO everyone I am a bit new to this (although I have been looking in for a while now)

I have a 400 HC Chimaera (Cooper Green)and am looking for a bit more oooomph I did not realise that it was possible to obtain such a large boost in power as over 270bhp at the wheels, can any other HC owners give me any info on how to obtain more power from my car.

So would to get this much power it would be more cost effective to up grade to a 5 litre, I put a message on the Northern Ireland forum (there is a bloke there with nearly 280bhp 4.0 HC over there) to find out the spec of this car

The generally accepted figures are about: 5 litre 320TVRbhp, 285bhp at flywheel, 235 at the wheels; 5 litre with all the ACT and Mark Adams goodies and a 404 cam 340bhp at the flywheel and 290bhp at the wheels. Figures for the 4 litre are about 240/200/165; no amount of tuning is going to bring the 165 figure up to 270, sorry. No problem to fit a 4.6 or 5 though, except £, lol.
I would ignor the bloke who claims to have 280bhp from a four litre, he must be using a different scale of measuring to the rest of us.

I do take your point but the 4 litre HC in question does seem to belong to an established memeber (the RO of the Northern Irish area)so he should know what he is talking about. I'm just after so pointers to get a bit more power without changing my car for a larger engined version.

Surely, you mean 270 at the Flywheel..!? there is no way that a Normally Aspirated 4.0 HC is putting out 320 odd BHP at the Flywheel (which is going to equate to about 270 at the wheels)

On a general note to answer your question. Improve the induction side with better hoses, enlarged plenum trumpets etc, then get the Ignition and ECU dynamically remapped, this will make huge differences. Of course one thing to consider is that a higher flatter torque curve is what you should be aiming for, rather than a steep power peak.

Cheers,
Matt

Well thanks for the link to the thread.. I read withh interest this bit:

"I know of a few cars that have blown their engines on that RR due the the operators lack of knowledge, and very poor cooling fan setup.
As for horror stories from customers cars....I could write a book, and there are other people who could do similar.
Id sooner reccomend a washing machine repair man to work on your car, than CT. "

Basically I do not believe the figures from the RR. You'll have to take it on trust as a new guy here that we discuss power figures on a very regular basis and I have never heard of a 4.0HC putting out 320odd bhp at the flywheel even with some fairly major engine work, and I believe that the car in question is a STANDARD 4.0 HC. The figure is not true, HONEST

Matt.

Yup, much as I'd love to believe it, 320fly/270wheels for a standard 4.0HC just sounds (way) too high to me.

Lots to think about, Colin L if you are watching this can you confirm these figures. How do you calculate the 'loss' between fly wheel figues and back wheel figures, My book says that my HC should be 285bhp (this is a rear wheel figure I pressume) so it out of the relms to gain a few more horses by a cam or head work?

When you say 'book' is this a TVR publication? You'll see from the 'How Much Power' thread that TVR figures and 'real world' figures can be quite different...

Colin, please forget all "published" figures regarding TVR BHP, it will make your life a lot easier.

I apologise if this is a bitter pill to swallow, but the cars are all well under "what TVR says"

and just for the record, all "published" figures are at the Flywheel.. it gives a better number for the journalists

I'm sure Colin L will make an appearance sometime...He's far too busy out and about in his silver 278BHP Chim complete with T-shirt printed with the power figures

Well a Griff 500 was on the RR first and produced 268BHP at the wheels.
Colin's was next and produced 278 !!

There were 3 witnesses....

Personally, I think there has been an engine swap at some point and a 5L dropped in...eh COLIN ???

At the end of the day, it's all relative...just get out there and enjoy it !!

Stu, thanks for that, you are right I should just get out and enjoy it and make the most of what the car has to offer.
Perhaps the famous Irish mist clouded the gentleman in questions eyes, any pictures of the T shirt?

Maybe too many pints to read the RR report properly

I was over in that part of the world a few months ago and did'nt see a single TVR, mind you it was the winter and I did sample the local produce a bit
