Loud power steering
Discussion
Hi guys,
I've had my Chim for about 5 months now, ever since I've had it I've noticed that when at low speed when turning the power steering sounds quite loud, it's a hard noise to describe and I'm also only assuming it's the power steering. Is this normal or could anyone tell me what it is if it needs fixed?
Many thanks,
Jordan

Yes, the obvious thing is to check the fluid level. But if that doesn't work suggest trying the following:
- Jack both sides of the front of the car so the wheels are off the ground, turn the engine on and hold the steering wheel on full lock for a few seconds in each direction. Repeat a few times. This will both ensure there is no air in the system and also help establish if the noise is always present or just under load
- Changing PAS fluid is not a service item (as far as I'm aware) at any mileage on any of the models, so the fluid in your system could be 20 years old! It could also have been topped up with all kinds of varieties over the years too. There is certainly no harm in changing and on one occasion this did reduce PAS noise on a wedge I had at the time
- Assuming the above doesn't make any difference, the chances are you need a new steering pump to stop the noise. Try some of the land rover sites if you don't want to pay the TVR tax as they are the same pump

With the car cold check the fluid level and condition. It should be a nice red colour.
Run the car and exercise the steering lock to lock but don't stay on full lock too long.
When all is nice and warm check the fluid again. If it is now pink (has become aerated) then you most likely have a pump issue.
As has been said fluid change is not on the TVR service schedule so a change would likely be beneficial and would be a good first move even if the fluid has gone pink in the above test.
