Hello all
I've decided a TVR's the car for me, just need a little guidance. I'm hopefully going to look at a 95 4.0l HC 34k on the clock, its had 3 owners FtvrSH and its up for £14k. Does that sound about right?? I'd been offered another car of similar age that had, had 5 owners is this common?? Is there a noticeable differance in 4.0lHC performance over the standard 4.0l?

You'll get lots of opinions here, but I would say that it sounds like a reasonable price for that. I've never driven an HC before, but I don't think they command much of a premium over the standard 4's. If it's your first TVR you probably won't notice a massive difference either - both will feel frighteningly, ridiculously fast!

If you're not buying from a dealer, do yourself a favour and get it checked over. A good place to start (and I know - I'm sorry - I keep going on about this, but I believe it!!!) is to have a look underneath at the state of the chassis. If a 95 car has a perfect chassis, its a good sign. I'd still get it checked though!

Reading between the lines it looks like you're going to buy privately. So you need to go into this with eyes open and if it's the first TVR that you're seriously looking at / going for a drive etc then promise yourself not to become so totally infatuated that you fail to be diligent in checking the motor over and, most definitely, get an independent check on the body/mechanicals and a check on any outstanding HP.

Obviously you'll also want a full service history (either TVR dealer or recognized independent) to correlate the mileage on the clock (Tiv odometers are notoriously unreliable) and to get an assessment of what's be done. Don't hesitate to call the recent service centre up and ask about the car. I did this and the manager I spoke to was keen to talk to me as a prospective customer and sensing possible new business.

The sound and feel of a powerful v8 has the potential to screw your objectivity within several microseconds. So just make sure that you play hard to get. There's a good selection of cars out there and you're the one with the cash. Make the sellers work hard for their money. But when you find the right one, and you've checked all the boxes, go for the throat because chances are someone's walking the same path.

Very best of luck in your search. Come back and tell us what you bought.

Mine will be ready for sale for around that price next week (I only need to photograph it and give it a final polish). Watch this space...more details here: www.pistonheads.com/members/showcar.asp?carId=65

Manek – sorry you've decided to sell. Thought we were on for this deal on the Afterburners?

'Reading between the lines it looks like you're going to buy privately.'

Suggest you get along to your nearest TVRCC meeting, poke a few in the flesh and quiz the drivers. Forewarned is forearmed and you can't so too much research on these beasts. Do your homework and get a good one, even if it's a bit more than the cheapest 'dogs'.

Best of luck! (I've bought three TVRs privately and no cock-ups yet!)

Yes, well...I've had a little change of heart. I've decided to leave them on the car in the interests of helping to differentiate it. If they prove to be a sticking point -- non-standard, blah, blah! -- then I'll whip them off and I'm happy to give you first refusal.

How's that?

Manek – that's fine. Don't think you'll have any probs selling them with them on though – they'd be a plus point for me in fact if I was a buyer....

Thanks Mikey

Didn't want to think I'd let you down...

I just thought some people might jib at them though -- advice from so-called experts like Quentin Willson is always "if it's been tweaked, run away".

Daft, I call it...

I don't think that sort of reasoning applies to TVR's, which are all totally individual anyway.

Something like the Zertec Speed 12 headlamp conversion on my car might put a few people off, but would probably attract just as many others who might not have considered a Chimaera otherwise, and thats about as radical a mod as any sane person would consider.

And who in their right mind is going to prefer Fiesta lights to the AfterBurners? I don't think TVR's would the vehicle of choice for anyone that anally retentive!!

Jeez, I hope not!

It's upsetting enough to be having to sell the car in the first place, let alone start taking it to bits beforehand!
