Confirmed - there are no hidden catches or stops - it just pulls off.
Trickier if you have Tuscan seats.....silly

Additional info.
In the end of the headrest tube is a spring clip which is there to stop the tube coming out of the seat in normal operation.
The good hard pull to get the tube out will likely move the spring clip.
Before you re-fit get a pair of long nose pliers and grip the spring clip up inside the tube and pull. this will reposition the clip so it again pokes out of the slot in the side of the tube.

I had exactly the same issue last weekend when I fitted a pair of seatbelt guides.
The trick seems to be when they are at the end of their travel ( nearly out), waggle them slightly from left to right as you pull. (sounds familiar smile)
It releases the spring clip without damaging it. Easy when you get the knack.

Cheers ....

Interesting. I have my driver's seat in bits at the moment (passenger seat fitted to driver's side for now). There is no spring clip inside the tube, the headrest just pulled out easily.

It may have been apart before and lost because the headrest pushes down a bit too easily.

If you have the seat apart check and see if your spring clip has found its way down into the seat back.
