this is ocean1 formerly tvrlove. My chimaera has its mot looming,is a local garage ok for this or are specialists a better bet, as they understand tvr's better, any advice greatly appreciated.

I've had no problem with the local boys doing the MOT. Had to point out that the rear number plate was back-lit, but apart from that ...

They might expect the handbrake to work if they are not familier with TVRs?

Might be funny taking it to a non-specialist, quite a few dodgy garages usually feed you the same line hoping you just say 'go on do it while it's with you' I think the favorite was your headlights are out of alignment, and be sure to stand about and watch them try and figure out how to ajust them when they pop the bonnet open Give them 5 minutes and wait for them to say 'are well they weren't far out'

Understand from local sources that apart from handbrake, it's the headlamp height adjustment and emissions that are the achille's heals. I'm going through similar anxieties for my (car's)first MOT this week.
Good luck

Much prefer local bods. Chat up the mechanic and get to sit in the seat while he checks the lights etc. That's the best way to get the handbrake passed!!! Plus, rather than simply fail it while you're at work, you can get them to fix/adjust things. Like the headlight alignment on a Griff, for example! Had I not been there it would have failed; since I stayed with them I got it adjusted for free and an MOT as well.

With a Chimaera it might be worth mentioning the technique for closing the bonnet. I noticed when I picked mine up that the bonnet wasn't secured and grimaced when I tried to guess how many times they might have slammed the bonnet down.

And check it is closed, I did 5 miles back from the garage, reached the 1st stretch of road where I could put my foot down and noticed the trailing edge of the bonnet lifting, pulled over and found it wasn't shut

The latest MOT printout I have shows my Chimaera to be producing zero emissions. Quite impressive really. Who needs hydrogen power when you have a sympathetic MOT tester...?

I got a local garage to do the MOT. The first TVR they had in the 18 years they have been a testing station. They asked me to sit in the car and fiddle with stuff and I managed to have a good look at the underside whilst it was on the ramps. For £40 it may be worth getting a local to look at it and only go the a dealer/independent if there is anything major to fix.

Used my local garage...have done for years (they always tested my Mog when I had it) - very understanding and enthusiastic mechanic...no probs at all.
