Steering Rack Play

How much play should there be if any where the bottom shaft goes into the rack. I have about 0.5mm each way when I rock the steering.

Is it buggered?
Can the liner or bearing be replaced?

Rest of the rack seems fine.

Got to ask, as MOT is due in June. Does anyone know how much a recon is if it fails on this.

BUMP!

You're best bet is to ask the MOT guys, but you can have a look with the bonnet open and get someone to rock the wheel. Look out for ares of play, could be one of the UJ's

i'd be suprised if they failed you for that.
worth getting fixed before it gets too bad though - spoils the feel of the car if the points of interface aren't quite right, IMO
