I've decided I can't bear the noise any longer! Car is fully decatted with Clive F Y piece and a custom silencer instead of the standard (I had the custom unit installed to replace the original I had on the car when I bought it, but this only deepened the sound without doing much to quiten it) I think the noise now is 115 - 120 db. I was originally thinking I would put the main cat back in but would like to keep the Clive F Y so now I think it's time to renew the whole exhaust and get a standard box. I have spoken to all the main suppliers and one of them has offered extra silencing. As well as the standard main box they put a perforated sleeve and wadding in the two tail pipes. Unfortunately although they can quote a price they can't tell me by how much this would reduce the noise. Has anybody tried this and what were the results (ideally an idea of the db it wil acheive)?

Any advice would be appreciated!

115-120, that’s deafening in the literal sense hehe

Clive Y Standard Exhaust 99-105 I’d estimate depending on Engine size
Extra cans might take off 7/8 dB
92 is very reasonable to live with.
I’ve gone back to standard Catt Y and exhaust. Around 92db going to about 95 at 3/4000 revs on my 4.6.
Sounds great thumbup

I’ve tried just about every possible exhaust combination, including Clive’s Y piece with straight through pipes. I found it to be far to loud and sold the Y piece. Still wasn’t happy so went for cherry bombs with standard cat. That was the best combination I found.

Until turbo came along.

There are two sort of noises smile

Front noises and back noises. I find the front noise of the removed pre cats very annoying, especially on a run. Borrow some bolt ons to see if that makes the car quieter and if it’s still annoying front noise is your target to reduce,

When mine was standard all cats in place on the full it was 101 and tick over 85.5

I then had the box opened up plasma cutting top section of silencer, removing sound proofing take out honeycomb perforated pipes and replace with a solid tube modifying pipes to make it straight through. It's now 123.8

So theoretically doing as you suggest the reverse and not doing anything upfront, you could be looking at reducing it by 20 odd.

This.......loads of popping and nicely loud. Mine has stainless headers and CliveF Y piece into the standard pipe

Just to add, mine was on a Clive F Y too. I say "was", I have swapped the Clive F Y for a turbo, so car is now around 95dB. yes

I had custom tail pipes made for mine, after having the precats removed because they were found to be knackered I found the exhaust note/ tone very annoying on a run and I wasn't using the car.
The rear pipes were enlarged and silencers fitted inside so there is no restriction from reducing the pipe size from the original, I had them made to be removable so if I ever sell the car the next owner could change back if required.
The exhaust note/tone is now much better and was 92db at my last track day, I don't know where you are based but I am in north Essex if you want to have a look and listen.

Mine is 100% original unaltered, Im living in hope that everyone will realise this is this best combination (so I can buy all the modded exhausts at a cheap as chips price).
I have to say after extensive long runs to France, Belgium and around Scotland. I know exactly when Im doing 60 MPH without looking at the speedo. The exhaust noise changes,it makes what I can only describe as a noise like a WW2 Lancaster bomber on a run. Love it.

This is a great option and on my to do list.

I have driven Kevs car and it is absolutely perfect sound wise. You still have the RV8 noise but all at a sensible level.

What about your Trumpet noise? Is it out of the cupboard yet? You are expected for the 19th rehearsal...

I have main cat and standard silencer then added silencing in the tailpipes, they look exactly the same as the standard tailpipes just larger.
I don't have any pictures from underneath the car and it's away being fettled at the moment but I have this one from the rear.

Nice thought - but I have done a couple of track days since fitting my turbo, and the car has lost about 10 dB

Trev - thanks very much for the info, that looks like what I need. Who did the work for you? Are you happy with the quality of the stainless and the welding etc as I have heard stories from people who aren't happy! I see you're going to the track day at Brands next Friday, I may be able to catch up with you and have a listen then as I live not too far away.

10 at 4000 revs, could be quite a bit more when below 3000 revs Anthony.
