While I am busy with my body off refurb, I am upgrading the old brakes.
I have a 1993 430 Chimeara
So for the FRONT
Original type was 260mm vented. (early type)
I have bought 280mm discs and Fiesta ST150 calipers as discussed by others on here in the past. smile
So that should be sorted smile

But for the REAR i'm not sure
Original type is 240mm solid discs (early type)
Q1. Do I need to upgrade?
If so
Q2. What should I upgrade to?
I have heard that I could use 500 rear brakes?
(What can I get that is not too expensive?)

(Oh and before you ask, I'm not planning any track days.)

Thanks for your adivce.
Simon

I'd have thought the standard (solid) rear disc's are more than adequate for road use? Maybe just some decent pads.

Fronts were originally 240mm vented MK1 Sierra 1.6, your rear later 400/500 upgrade will involve different hub/bearing carriers too along with the wider calipers and pad carriers and bigger 273mm discs , these may or may not be the ones for your conversion but they are the part you need to change (longer caliper mounts/ears) may as well renew the rear wheel bearings while your at it, the biggest change will come from the front upgrade the rear upgrade will show minimal benefit under road conditions IMO

I did the conversion with alot of help from Simon

It was worth it , bearing carriers are plentiful from Cossy breakers .
The wider jawed calipers were available for not alot of money but not seen any new ones for a while .

Need to be careful not to over supply the rear with braking force. I have mine at ~85% front ~15% rear as this suits the light rear end and rear driven wheel configuration. Rear drive, especially with a large engine has significant engine braking, this when added to heavy foot braking can lock the rears, that's something you don't want to experience. I found the standard 33% rear set-up too readily caused the rears to lock when braking hard over slight undulation on track and that is the reason I opted to move braking split forward.

I would leave the rears as standard. They are probably too much as they are with standard front brakes. With your front upgrade they will be about right.

I find my bigger 887/888 cosworth calipers about right with the standard solid rears.

I fitted the Brembo front caliper with 324mm discs and DS2500 pads, at the rear I fitted the Reyland 300mm discs and run them with standard Mintex pads, no evidence of the rears locking up before the fronts
