Starter Motor Issues
Discussion
Oh what a time for search to be not working!
TED
I've got the dredded and well documented hot start problem and also on a cold start it'll click a few times before firing up.
Now, is this a complete new motor or can I just get a new solenoid?
Where can I source a reconned or fairly priced one?
Thansk.

The cold click sounds like the solenoid sticking. When I had this problem on my last Chim, I took the motor off and got a decent spray of WD40 into it, it worked like a dream from then on. An easy job too as its very accessable from under the car.
Gotta be worth a go before binning it (?)
Cheers,
Matt.

I've just read almost exactly the same thing on a Google search which took me to a VW forum!
Apparently cleaning the brushes/connections to increase voltage and a low/poor battery are the first ports of call!
So the old WD-40 it is then! Cheers.
I managed to search Pistonheads through Google!
Looks like it could be a less than perfect condition battery, and the starter isn't getting the volts due to poor TVR wiring, so
If I wire the starter directly up to the battery via a 4 pin relay and then connect the ignition to the relay to give a direct connection to battery this may work.

Update: Started taking steering column and dash apart to trace the wire that goes directly to starter so I could wire up a relay direct from the battery.
Upon closer inspection of the battery it appears the secondary postive terminal connection had become loose.
Tightened it up and I could instantly tell a difference in starting, much more spritely
Haven't had it hot enough to try hot starts yet but fingers crossed...
