The wiper motor on my Griffith (same as Chimaera I am assuming) is toast. From what I have read they are kind of TVR unique, and 29W as opposed to the more common 14W motors.
The gear and "gubbins" housing on mine is good, its just the armature has burned out and the brushes and associated mounting plate is also burnt out. So, as I see it, I only need the cylindrical motor bit. Can I take this motor off a Jag XJ6 and mate it to the lower TVR part?

I can get a Jaguar wiper motor cheaper than the TVR rebuilt ones as I am in the USA.

Here's a link to a Jag one on EBay in the US.

Visually appears the same but at $150 your still using a second hand motor?

I recently gave in having tried new brush plates etc and bought one of these from TVR parts and so far it is brilliant, it works effortlessly on a dry screen, there is now a speed difference between normal and high speed and my intermittent works, a bit pricey but I'm pleased with the result.

Id happily pay that to be honest as the wipers are dreadful and a real irritating feature for me.

Absolutely agree. I've had my wiper motor apart a couple of times now and I think its as good as it can be. Even works on a dry screen but it is pitiful really.
That upgrade looks to be the answer. cool

My Griff had 17k miles on it when I bought it and the wipers were crap. I dismantled the whole lot and found the wiper spindles and rack was in perfect condition, the gear wheel in the motor was also fine. The motor however was completely knackered, the brushes were worn and cracked. I managed to find a new brush plate and fitted it, the wipers were little better and over the years I've fitted two sets of brushes.

The motor always used to get very hot in use and I've heard it said the motor overheating has been the cause of fires in TVR's?

This year fed up with fearing wet weather whenever I take the car out (nearly always rolleyes ) I decided to go for this motor upgrade.

I was tempted by Adrian Venn's option of a full motor overhaul but as I understand it he uses original parts and I wasn't persuaded that I would be any better off than I had already achieved.

Fitting the new upgraded motor was a bit of a faff, removing the spherical bearing from the wiper motor body took a bit of care and the way the spherical bearing is fitted means you need to grind a bit of aluminium away to remove the bearing and spring metal retainer. The whole job took about a couple of hours but whilst I was at it I fully dismantled the wiper motor body and cleaned/regreased the gear spindle, slider etc.

The only thing I would do differently if I were doing it again is to order a new park switch and fit it while it's all apart, nothing wrong with my current one but it looked a bit discoloured and brittle but it's all working fine so maybe not entirely necessary.

With TVRCC discount the motor cost £161 and if you can't fit it yourself there will be some labour costs to add.

I've only used them in anger twice so far, once on the trip over to Matt Smiths for wheel alignment and last Sunday leaving the Burghley gathering, stupidly I now find myself switching them on for the least excuse and grinning cos at last I've got wipers that work!

You could get the armature re-wound and fit a new brush plate, whatever you decide to do make sure that the wiper mechanism and spindles are not tight
