On Sunday, I had the roof off my 98 5l and was enjoying the drive to Cobham, going back into London, it got chilly so after a coffee stop I turned the heat on full blast and set off again. The temp, which even in London crawling speed never goes above 90 and a bit, shot up to 100. That got me worried especially because the day before I noticed a cooling juice spill (I attributed that to overflow because of the site (front right). The fans were coming on at regular intervals but were cutting in about 10degrees above the usual. I kept the heater blowing at full blast thinking that would get rid of some extra heat, and I found a good fix’er up spot next to a friends house. Turned the engine off and let the key in to leave the fans blowing the temp down, the fans cut out at 95+. As soon as I turned the heater fan off the temp gauge dropped to 80!?!?!? Turn the heater fan on Temp: 95, fan off temp: 80, fan on temp:95, you get the picture. The engine was off, so no extra heat was generated, plus the temp change was very quick to be real.
I drove off with the heater fan off, and the she behaved in as she normally does.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any thoughts on this?

Heater blower is for some GBK reason powered off the same circuit as the dash instrumention. If its drawing too much power it may be fscked or on the way. I have voltmeter & can see a similar drop with blower on full as when cooling fans cut in, but it doesnt affect instruments.

You could also check the earth, location for the fan and its earth seem to be in dispute (I must be careful with my herecy). I'm pretty sure you will find it just to the side of the battery, behind the carpet is the 4 pin connector (I can provide pictures as proof:-) which may benefit from a good clean up. The earth is via the loom round the heater box/ extreme left of the dash, I would assume it is terminated with either the dash bundle or at the transmission tunnel body mounts (bugger to get at).

I completely re-wired my front end and the only earth going back down the wing was for the side repeater - no sign of a heavy duty black cable - TVR did actually size the cabling correctly on my car at least (just not enough earths for twin light operation & driving lamps).

Removing the blower motor is not for the faint hearted, only 4 screws hold the mixer/matrix and the blower motor wing panel, but finding the pop rivets holding the panels in place is very tricky due to the @ 6 tubes of sikaflex gluing it all together.

Motor is same as 90's Vauxhall Nova.

Caveat: we both have early cars YMMV

Thanx for the advice guy's.
Spend: I'll get the multimeter out and play around. I really hope I will not have to dive in for a blower change.

Check the earth connection thats somewhere under the offside front wheel arch. Earth problems are common on the Chimaera and I had the same sort of problem on the gauges which I traced to this.

Do you mean the earth bolt on the chasis? Checked it this morning and everything looks tight and no corosion. Could it be earthing wire playing up?
