Been contemplating the whole exhaust thing, I love the sound but it needs to be louder and make the popping sound now! Whats the best way to do this and does it affect the fuel consumption? Any mods I can do to exisiting standard exhausts or is it a case of new one fitted?

Dont like the neighbours anyway

Cheapest and easiest way is to have the baffles removed from the silencers and straight through pipes put in. Cost is around £140ish.
Offords do this conversion using 2 cherry bombs instead of straight pipe and it sounds awesome - next on my long list of things to do.

I've had a straight through conversion. yes the pops and bangs are superb... however it idles like a "tug boat" (not my choice of words, read it in another pH post).

Bear in mind the extra pops and bangs probably mean it's running lean...

Had mine done at Austec near gatwick about a week ago. £152.00, they strip out the baffles and weld in straight through pipes. Its very load and sounds a lot racey'er. sounds like you have more power than you actually do. The popping and banging is outrageous, ive had bangs that have sent dogs jumping 4 foot in the air! Best money you'll ever spend.

I had mine done at Austec too. The sound is absolutely fantastic - pop bang city - love it.

Do it mate, you won't look back

Surely the pops and bangs are unburnt fuel exploding in the exhaust, which means it's running rich not lean?

And after its done, go for a topless drive through Petworth. Lovely acoustics in that village!

Just think carfully about having your exhaust done if you plan on doing trackdays etc. Alot of them have noise levels which a straight through exhaust will struggle to get below..

Anyone had the baffles out with the sports exhuast??

Am so tempted to take the baffles out after MOT... but am concerned will kill the next noise check as side my side with another chimp mine is a tad ..loud

The neighbours love the car.. but increasing their subsidence may grate a tad.....

It doesn't mean the engine is running lean or rich per se

The mechanism by which you get the pops and bangs is this; it's when the ECU thinks the engine is not receiving any fuel at all. What happens is that there is a little fuel getting through, but not enough for the ECU to recognise, and tell the engine to spark. So what happens is that a little bit of fuel is injected, but not enough to ignite a spark. The cycle continues, and the engine 'thinks' it's ejecting exhaust gases, but since it didn't spark, it's injecting fuel in to the exhaust system, which is hotter than the spark chamber, so it ignites it.

When you think about it, this concurs with logic. The way to make pops and bangs happen is to thrape it, then come right off the throttle, then 'feather' it. Thrape-ing it makes the engine use all the fuel available, then you starve it, then feathering the throttle puts enough fuel in to make a pop (in the recently heated exhaust), but not enough to make the ECU tell the engine to fire. So you get ignition in the exhaust, not the ignition chambers.

Technically, what's happening is that at that point there is too lean a mixture to burn in the ignition chambers, so it is excreted as exhaust gases and burned in the hottest part of the exhaust. It is not however an indicator that your engine is running lean. And it's not an indicator that your engine is running rich either. It's bloody good fun though

Disclaimer - I got all this from someone significantly cleverer than me. I'm confident in the principles, but may have some of the detail wrong.

You are quite right Rude Girl

I used to be able to make my old Renault 5 backfire loud enough to wake the dead! The idea is thus....

Whilst doing about 30mph or so (and making sure you are in a straight line) flick the ignition off (being carefull not to engauge the steering lock) and give the throttle a couple of good squirts. Then, whilst rolling and with the clutch pedal depressed, flick the ignition back on and bump start the engine and floor thr throttle. The following explosion that results as the unburnt fuel is ignited in the exhaust system can be heard for miles!

I must point out, however, that it is NOT advisable that this is done on the public road for obvious safety reasons and by doing so you run the risk of damaging your engine (its ok in a 5 but wouldn't wana try it in a Chim!). Demonstrates the principle nicely though

Some pop and bang more than other with exactly the same doen to them - my first was nuts, second less so but still loud just less popping and banging on the over run. All to do with the fueling on the chip in the car - if slightly over fueling when you have it done verse correct fueling you will get better popping and banging!

I have thrown the whole lot away now though - much Popping and Banging!

IIRC, when the straight pipes go on, the baffles are rendered ineffective in any case...

5 Turbo is carb fed though mate, hence when you you give the accelerator a few pumps the enrichment pump pumps fuel into the intake and then when you flick the ignition back on it bangslike a goodun!

I had a GTX mate, not the GT Turbo. GTX was/is a 1.7 normally aspirated lump. Not a lot slower than the 1.4 Turbo in the real world but your quite, my buddy used to have a GT Turbo Raider and could pop and bang something stupid

Noise isn't an issue in an MOT.
