Recently my Chim 500 has developed an unusual starting problem whereby with each turn of the key there is simply a click and everything is completely dead, if you turn the key in the ignition three times its the same but normally on the fourth turn it fires as normal.

Fuel Pump primes as normal and the whole ignition system has been renewed this year without issue and worked fine since.

Starter motor last replaced about 11-12 years ago, alternator is original.

Anyone come across this problem before or recommend a solution ?

Hi,

I had a similar problem with my Chimaera, what I did was to check out the wiring and the low tension wire female terminal was a bit corroded. After changing the corroded 6.5 mm female terminal connector and cleaning the male terminal on the solenoid it has worked fine ever since.

The click is likely to be the starter solenoid, probably a bit sticky and just makes contact on your 4th go, i believe they can be serviced but a new motor complete start at around £60, there are a several threads around here on the subject, but and many others went for relatively chesp ones and they seem to work fine, i believe they are originally from the V8 land rover

Had the same problem. Starter solenoid connection getting gummed up. You can take it apart and clean it or get a new starter.
