New problem for me
Discussion
After servicing and generally loving the car a little, it has repaid me with its first-ever fault.
I have managed around 100 or so miles after oil, filter and coolant change. All seems well and the car runs and drives as good as it ever has. With one exception.
Under hard acceleration, between 5-6krpm I get hesitation, and a few bangs from the exhaust.
I am thinking (hoping) coil pack and HT leads will fix it. Coilpack is the original (And it has been bloody hot lately) and the HT leads have seen better days. I'm still running the plug extenders too.
The only other thing I can think of is camshaft? (Rather hope not).
So, over to the collective wisdom of you guys. If a coil pack and HT leads are the next likely step, please recommend some. I started looking but it's a minefield.

If the mapping is out then the car could be running very lean at high revs, so I would say it is important to get everything checked.
When people map cars to give pops and bangs, they tend to run it very lean off the throttle, so if yours is doing the same on throttle I would be worried.
Old plug extenders are better than new ones, and I have some spares if you can find the culprit.
If you are on coil packs, do you actually have an ignition amp? Not seen one on my car.
I have managed the entire journey to London before now with not one but two misfires - it only became obvious in London traffic.
So you could have a single misfire which only becomes obvious under max load.
Where are you based? I will be near Cambridge with my TVR tomorrow and could bring spares of some of the ignition bits with me if it helps.

Sorry, mabey I'm using the wrong terminology. The car is completely standard.
I mean coil, not coil pack. Sorry.
It has a standard distributor cap and rotor arm, they look in ok nick. but have seen better.
The HT leads are not original but are old. the coil and amp are both original.
Is their one place I can go to for a new coil, Leads, Cap and rotor? I think, ideally, I would like to replace the dizzy with a digital one... if such a thing exists for the TVR?
I guess, for now, get a kit like this?

And a new amp.

Might as well get some plugs at the same time.

What say the PH collective?

Looks good to me, I’d substitute those plugs though as they are probably the original B7ECS which most choose to move away from.

and if you're feeling flush, remove and discard the plug extenders and fit these instead

How on earth are those little socks so expensive? Guess its worth it when ditching the extenders though.
Are these plugs the correct ones?

This looks a much cheaper alternative if the size is ok, anyone tried some?

You can get a 123ignition for the RV8. very good quality, but wont honestly make a huge difference to MPG or power. Any timing tweaks need to be done on a rolling road to maximize the torque to get the best from it.Ruined! Just ruined!

The ignition kit that came off is horrible. It's the original coil, dizzy cap and rotor arm. the leads have been replaced at some point with cheap nasty (thin) red ones... that turned to dust as I remove them.

The thing won't start now, I have spark so think I just have the firing order wrong. though it doesn't even cough. I didn't label anything up as the online documentation on firing order is so good. Apparently, I should have labelled them up.

Looks like they couldn't withstand the under bonnet temperatures. It gets hot under there!

From the sound of that attempted start you either have the leads in the wrong holes or the ignition is too far advanced.
From your description I would guess you have the leads in the right order but just one or more places round the cap from where they should be.
Get someone to assist with a finger in number one sparkplug hole while you turn the engine over by hand. Assistant will say they can feel pressure so continue turning until the timing marks align. Pull dizzy cap and see where the rotor is pointing. Should be pointing at number one lead if not start moving leads (Clockwise 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2).

Wrong holes.... the little indents on the diagrams on the internet do not reference the clips on the distributor... like I thought. they reference the indents that align the cap, on the inside. that you cannot see once in place.Steve
All working now and fired up. Heat socks and plugs next.

I have the exact same problem right now runs great except above 5000rpm it hesitates but only in third and fourth gears leads look OE with extenders but car has Full TVR specialist history so only ever messed with by TVR company
Be good to know what the problem was ? Else it’s changing most things have not got time to change one by one and keep testing ! Finding a road to open it up to above 5000rpm means a good drive out ! Lol.....
