Wheels and Offsets... again
Discussion
OK, so the threads on brake upgrades have got me thinking. I have Estorils at the moment 7x15 front with 225/50/15's on, and 7.5x16 rears with 245/45/16's.
I'm thinking about some of the BBS two piece rim lookalikes (but 1 piece for affordability!) - something like the Lenso BSX range.
I plan to stick with the current tyre widths of 225 and 245, because I know they fit with no issues, and I know what the car drives like.
There are a couple of options. I could go 16 front and 16 rear, but the only widths available are 7.5 and 9. 225's will fit on a 7.5 rim no bother, but a 245 isn't ideal (even though I've got 245's on a 7.5 at the moment). I think a 9 inch rim might be too wide.
Or I could go 16 front (7.5 wide) and 17 rear with an 8.5 inch rim. That's an ideal size for a 245 tyre, so that is probably the preferred option.
Offsets are I understand ET25 front and ET32 rear, with a 63.2mm hole in the middle.
So the question is do I need the same offsets for the wider rims, say 7.5 front and 8.5 rear? I'd have thought so, because maintaining the same tyre widths as now just on wider rims, but with lower profiles to keep the rolling radius the same, *should* put the edges of the tread in the same place as they are at the mo. Or am I missing something obvious? (There won't be anything new there if I am).
Finally, if I went the 16/16 route, will a 9 inch rim fit?

Offsets for the rears only really affects whether they will foul suspension or bodywork
Offsets for the fronts also affects Scrub Radius
Changing this can radically alter the handling and stability of the car, especially under braking
I don't intend to change the offsets either front or back, if I can help it. The website Magpies linked to was really helpful, and confirmed what I thought was the case - which is that wider rims with the standard offset and the same tyre width leave everything more or less in the same place, with the only real difference being how far the tyre sidewall deflects from the shoulder to the rim.Offsets for the fronts also affects Scrub Radius

I think I'm going to go 16 front 17 rear, with the only difference being I'll go down to a 215 section front from 225. No reason other than they don't make the tyre i'd choose (Yoko Advan AD08R's) in the 225/16.
Now all I have to do is to figure out how to pay for it all without the Chief Financial Officer finding out.......
