fuel pump dead

Hi - been a member for a while but never seem to get a chance to post much. Having great fun with Chim - except for last friday on the way home from Leven (excellent set of new wiper arms and blades - heaps better than the old ones) car conked out. Turns out fuel pump is getting power but is dead (according to the RAC before they arranged for a low-loader ride home) i have searched archives and seen lots of advice - so i have checked loads of things i never even knew existed such as fuel inertia switch etc, have also cleaned and wd40'd connectors on the pump but still no joy. My question is as follows - is it easy to change? I have checked the bible and threads here but most people seem to solve the problem before it gets to the "new one required" stage. it looks pretty simple in theory - am aware of pressure of the fuel in front of the pump but the engine has been cranked so many times i reckon theres probably no fuel left in the line now anyway. Thanks to all those who posted various bits as they have been helpful so far - just wanted to check this out before i take the plunge and try to do it myself.

can you gear [and feel] the two relays above the battery coem on and off?

If not = replacement, if they are, then posible ecu problem, but that's as far as my knowledge goes.

the ecus can short out easily via teh pathetic position of the libve, and also if they are stuffed against the fuses where [on some cars] there are live elements uninlsulated and that blows them.

From the sound of it you've been cleaning up potentially duff connections which is a good thing, but you also need to check whether you are actually getting electrical power at the pump, and if not then work back through the system to find why not.

Before you swap the pump, just check whether it makes any noise when you feed 12v directly to it. If it doesn't, I would guess it is completely knackered or seized. If it *does* run, try starting the car.

If this is the case then the fuel pump is dead and you need a new one. But make sure that this is the case first.
Its easy to replace, its on the pax side of the car behind the wheel and straped to the chassis inbetween the two lower wishbone mounts. very straight forward to change, might be worth changing the fuel filter while your down there.

It has been known that the fuel pump can stick,and responds well sometimes to a gentle tap or two to free it.Must admit though,i think i'd only want the peace of mind that a new unit can bring,if mine had got to this stage.But its worth knowing,if your stuck.

Thanks for all the help - I reckon it needs replacing (although I will check the relays first just to make sure). If it does need replacing can anyone suggest where I get one - dealer/halfords? or does anyone know what car it is originally from?

Hi - sorry to bring this to the top of the list again, I have posted on General TVR forum too but I am trying to check price of fuel pump. Having picked peoples brains on here I have established it is the pump that's gone, but I have been quoted £150 plus vat which seems steep. Anyone done it cheaper?
