Engine on its last legs???!!!!!!!!
Discussion
We have a Chim 4.0 1999 reg. The engine has a very slight missfire - not feeling particulary smooth although difficult to tell and also has a slight ticking noise all the time. Sometimes it can be very lumpy but generally it starts and gets you from A - B without too much trouble. We taken it to a few garages who have said you'd need to take it apart to tell whats wrong but prob cam wear or fuel injection or something pretty drastic. We are also planning to go to Le Mans.... the question is will it last or not??????? A garage told us yesterday that it shouldn't go out of our town let alone to Le Mans but I just really don't know what to think!?!?
Our BIG dilema is do we take it (with sufficient brakedown cover) or try and find a replacement car in 6 weeks??? Is there anything we can do to help it such as use a certain oil, put in loads of fuel injector treatment, any other suggestions???
Please let me know what you think and also if we do drag it down there is there particular items you suggest we take incase it brakes???

I'm not sure where you're based, but it sounds like this sort of issue would be bread and butter stuff to Austec in Crawley, West Sussex.
There are lots of stories about people having bizarre, perplexing engine problems being diagnosed and remedied very quickly by them Austec boys...

Indeed, it has been there a few times but we're just sick of chucking money at it. Austec have said its an underlying issue within the engine prob due to general wear (only got 50,000 on clock). Anyway, they said it would mean stripping it down just for a diagnosis let alone fixing the thing, and i just don't think it will be done in time for Le Mans anyway. we are in such a predicament, I don't think we will find a replacement in time either!
If a garage has advised you to get it fixed and not drive it, then I would tend to go with their opinion.
The problem isn't going to go away (IIRC you posted about this in January) and it will only get worse and cause more damage - going on what you have said.
If you continue to use the car, you risk doing more damage and getting a larger bill.
To me it seems your options are;
1) Get it fixed
2) Wait for it to go bang

The guys at Austec really know what they're talking about. I would go with their advice, rather than from us on this Forum taking a few shots in the dark as to what your problem might be.
It sounds like driving it anywhere in its present state is like playing a game of Russian roulette, and trying to get it down to Le Mans is even worse.
I really sympathise with your predicament, but it really sounds like the best option is to get it into Austec and let them do whatever it takes to get it running properly again. No matter how long it takes, it's surely a better solution that waiting for a very expensive bang?

Tempting... if its going to cost to take it apart anyway then prob best to do it after it has had good rag to Le Mans and back?
Not if it means shards of piston entering the cockpit at 100mph down the Autoroute...
For Gods sake get a life... is this really likley to happen 'shards of piston entering the cockpit at 100mph down the Autoroute' my arse
