Hi all,

bit worried about the Griff, I'm only getting 16 MPG out of her. Popped down to Henley Heritage to see if they could help but they wanted 50 quid just to put the diagnostic box on it. I told them to stuff it and then had second thoughts, maybe that's normal etc.etc.
Any thoughts?

P.S. Hoping to get to VW tomorrow if that's ok, being a new bloke and that.

On a 400 mile round trip I managed 24.5mpg, round town 15-16 seems about it. A reasonable distance might see 22mpg. Often wondered if there was something amiss, but saw a thread somewhere about 'how far on a tankful?' - It weighed up as around average. As I'm rarely economical in my driving style (I have a Rover for that), I just accept it as the norm.

I'd be interested to know what the dealer says, couldn't find any average figures in the handbook.

On my last tankful I just got less than 9 mpg, but purely due to my driving style yesterday. Its amazing what a little bit of considered driving can do to your consumption. I can regularly get 140miles out of a full tank (11 mpg) city driving with mixture of hard driving, and 240 miles motorway (18 mpg). The mpg for a griff sounds okay to me (don't have one though).

I normally get about 20mpg from my 4.0 Chim, and on a recent long run got about 25mpg.

However I do very little town driving in rush hour, so that probably helps.

Sounds right to me. On a good run I can do 230 miles on a tank, but that is being conservative and on motorways. Other wise it does go down quite quick.

Just checked the original TVR Spec brochure for my 1996 500 and TVR are economical with their figures, ie they don't give any, but I can get anything from 15 up to 28mpg out of mine, most of the time it is around the 20-22 mark as it is 50-75 mile runs once a week....... anyway I don't really care the car is pure unadulterated fun and it is good mpg for both cost and performance in my book!

Yet another reason why 4.0L griffiths are best, my little beauty returns at least 24mpg keeping more of those dusty £5 notes firmly in my wallet.

There are no figures as TVR are not obliged to give them. There are so many factors involved, including lead foot syndrome, I want to burst my ear drums with pops and bangs on the overrun-itis and not to be forgotten the the odd case of sitting-stationary- listening-to-the-burble-complications that is is very difficulr to guarentee anything.

The best MPG I got was 57 miles on one litre of fuel. OK the car was on an AA transporter going doen to Tower View after the head gasket went but it was pretty impressive just the same....

They are obliged to submit cars for testing, and the results of tests on all makes and models including TVR are published in a green covered government book every year. I have a 5 year old copy somewhere that SHG gave me, but I can't find it at the moment.

I have a 1992 4.0lt Griffith which I have owned for 2 1/2 years during this time the fuel consumption has ranged from 16MPG - 26MPG depending on driving style. Oh and the number of tunnels on the routes!

Went over to france in july.
Done Cambridge to St.Malo on £63 which i thought was pretty good in my 500 griff and i certainly wasn't hanging around. Only problem is i didn't clock the amount of miles covered so i cant work out the m.p.g.

I get around 23mpg on my 4.0 Griff, about 17 if I'm constantly flooring it. I live in the (apparently) beleagured countryside, lots of nice A roads & no city driving. Great fun driving yesterday, no $%&!ing tractors or Range Rovers around!

Griff 500: The day I drove it home from the dealer (100 miles) I reckon I got near 30 to the gallon. In every day use commuting from the borders into the outskirts of Edinburgh - mainly A roads and leaving everything in my wake, I get 23/24. In this type of use with a 500, you spend so much time in high gear the consumption is not too bad - you can overtake almost anything, almost anywhere in fifth and generally only need 4th if you want to make a point! For comparison I only achieved 28 'ish in my S2 and S3, using more gears and still making significantly slower progress. I would imagine town use will hammer consumption though.

I get about 18-20 mpg in my Griff 500 under normal road conditions, or abut 24-25 mpg on the motorway if I maintain a fairly constant speed. People (note: not truckers!) tend to dive out of its way, so there's not a huge amount of speeding up and slowing down.

FWIW, big white Volvos have this "parting of the ways" effect on the motorway too. Can't think why.
