Mount the speaker on legs to give you clearence from the tank in the back. I have done the same with some 6x9 in mt Griff. I did not want to cut holes into the boot so I worked out how much I needed to clear the tank and made some little legs, thanks to B&Q for the little legs. It may sound odd, but it looks good, and unless you look close at mine you cannot see the legs.

Have you go 6x9 already in the back? if not you may find it gives you all the bass you need.

The other option is to get a powered mini sub from Pioneer and a few others make them, and mount behind one of the seats, I have not done or seen this, but the idea sounds good, as bass is undirrectional in the lower Hz.

Theres a descrption of my speaker fitting here, put no pics yet:

get a pair of really good speakers in the back (e.g. Infinity, Boston, Macrom) with seperate tweeters and woofers

with these, you don't need any extra bass

I have Macrom 16cm woofers plus tweeters (no seperate amplifier) which works great

Yes, I have 6x9's in the rear bulkhead and also a 12 inch sub woofer imbertween the seats on the rear shelf, Still gives plenty of room to store things either side and also still allows the roof to go down without any probs, I have put the amp in the boot. Any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Chimaera #1 had just the setup you are describing, 2 6x9s and an 8" sub mounted on a piece of MDF sandwiched behind the carpet/bulkead - enough clearance between bulkhead and tank - just had to be careful when drilling/cutting away at the bulkhead to avoid the tank. I've said before that depending on the profile of the chassis, you might get a 10 inch sub in there, but the magnet may be compromised by the tank...

However, as others have said, a good pair of 6x9s that are properly amplified produce enough bass for most listening.
A ported box or tube would be the best option if you are going for serious noise as the car's construction does not lend itself well to mounting big free-air subs. They have the advantage of being removeable when you need the space for other things. Like all such things you get what you pay for, so avoid anything selling for 100 quid at Halfords and promising 500W

I saw a Griffith with a boot mounted box that ported in to the cabin through the bulkhead about 5 years ago...

Choose your weapons carefully, as they say.
