Every car had a alloy tag board of tags that got riveted to all the associated panels/trim...relating to build number. A@
I never found any tags on mine but it did have 1857 (which also formed part of the VIN) written in permanent marker on a number of parts, including the removable roof panel (on which it was etched). The Build numbers started at 1000 each year and became the last 4 digits of the VIN (model independent, just the order number when placed by the customer, then used as the build number).. well that was usually the case .. I don't know where numbers less than 1000 came from .

I think it is roughly a guide, the build numbers don't relate to registered date but as has been said before the one before mine was a Chimaera ( I have seen it) however the one before that may have been a Griff made in the same month. The 3 digit number earlier in this thread is missing the first digit and likely to be a 1.
They relate when the order was placed beginning the 1st Jan each year.
TVR (any manufacturer) invents the VIN number (to specified format SDLC etc. European Motor Car) nothing to do with the DVLA other than it appears on the V5C
Example for a Cerbera but each model has codes for engine , body etc.
