I know it is in the front off side wing, or rather that is where the pipe goes, but where it is and how do i get to it? Alternatively how is it supposed to be fixed/tied down?

I have a metallic clack when jolting the front suspension over sharp edges, yet the engine and gearbox are rock solid, all drop links and roll bars and wishbones secure. Springs, dampers and units all solid with no cracks. No witness marks on body or chassis and when exploratory wiggling is used only a coolant hose of the carbon canister pipe elicit any kind of noise. To be honest it happens either side and did for a long time think it was near side front.......but noise on a car that is neigh on impossible to replicate is a challenge to locate. Nothing felt through brakes or steering either, and only over sharp drops like a man hole......no it is not the man hole either. Also checked that rad and the fans are secured and that the bonnet was not rattling.

Oddly i did wonder if it was pads rattling in the caliper or being knocked............also it only did it in the Cotswolds last week, never in Lincolnshire which is more about state of roads....odd.

The vacuum pipe goes forwards in the wing. The pipe from the tank breather comes along the nearside chassis rail then across to the offside under the rad.
The canister is forwards of the rad and attached (near enough) to the front face of the offside inner wheel arch. If you take the cover off from the back of the headlight you may be able to get your hand in and feel it but I'm not 100% sure on that. A torch shone through the front grill may illuminate it.

On my 1995 large grill opening model it was fixed through the front of the offside wheel arch with one 6mm nut.

On my 98 450 it was mounted just behind the windscreen washer reservoir in the off side front wing. Access was through the headlamp access panel in the wheel arch. If you do have a split grille later model (mkII or III) and you want to remove it, you may need to increase the headlamp access hole a little to draw it through.

Mk1 Wide mouth version, 96 car........but even so it sounds like a double jointed right elbow technique will be employed. I bet it will not be loose as well.

thanks all.

I had a double clunk on my Saab when going over manhole covers and the like. On close inspection, one of the springs was cracked, and it was the broken ends meeting on both the down and the up that were making the noise.

Here's a photo of mine (at Central TVR) when it was stripped for painting. You can see the canister through the hole for the headlight. Note that the tubes aren't routed like in the photo - they've just pulled them all into the inner wing so that the engine bay can be painted.
