Have just got rid of the shunting which has been a real pain.clap

Replaced the Bosch R6 which are the equivalent of NGK 7's (which were just the same) with the often recommended BPR6EIX.

Also took the Emerald ECU out of adaptive feedback and went open loop.

Not sure which has made the difference but night and day the car is now a pleasure to drive at low speeds and much less embarrassing in traffic. Tick over is much smoother and consistent and the car much smoother away from a standstill. Win all round.

Will switch back to adaptive to see which has helped most but this might just set off the old plug debate again!

Can’t agree more. 6’s are far better suited to the fact we burble around mostly so soot the plugs up using 7’s.
The iridium provide one heck of a spark. thumbup
Expensive but well worth it in the end.

Wouldn't use a Bosch plug to break a window, glad it's worked out for you now though however

Might just have to agree - memory only but did feel things were worse with the filthy Bosch (no pun intended but they were very sooty).

Yeah, that’s not what we like to hear!

I bet the plugs are half the battle.

I went for a long drive in mine today. Still running the standard 7 plugs and 14 cux, smooth and shunt free.

What target AFR was the Emerald set to? Running open loop may well have richened the mixture depending on the map, and this will reduce shunting. Some gas tests in closed and open loop would be the way to go to see whats going on.

^ This thumbup makes a hell of a difference in the 2k rpm and below zone

Hi all

These are my current AFR and Injection maps - all comments welcome.

Car is 4.0 litre supercharged running 10 psi.

Certainly seems to be running richer now that it is open loop.

You are running near lambda 1 or 14.7:1 in the shunting zone, this is where the 14CUX has the same issue, the engine will run a whole lot better at 13.5:1 or so, but its likely to fail an MOT emissions test if you run like this assuming you still have catalysts. Interestingly if you do have catalysts are they getting any hotter open loop? Richer mixtures means more hydrocarbons are burnt in the catalyst matrix, so it gets hotter.

I've just checked my emails and this car was fitted with cats when I did the initial install in 2013 and saw it again in 2014 so that's the the afr target table is cat friendly in the areas most visited.

If you have an area which is bad, make a note of the revs and throttle positions, and richen the target afr in that area only .. let the ecu self-learn the new fuel trims required, and burn those to the ecu. Note if it's an area used for MOT testing then it will fail.

Much better than running with no lambda feedback at all!

I'm only a phone call away ken smile Last time I saw the car was almost exactly 3 years ago, if you want me to give it a once over and see if everything is still performing as it should then just let me know.

Happy driving

Hi Jules

Yes, car has not been touched since you saw it but shunting developed over a period and I think got worse with the Bosch plugs (may be wishful thinking).

I have been trying to get my head around mapping so I can have a better understanding of what goes on but perhaps it may be time to let you have another look at things.

The car definitely runs smoother on open loop with the shunting gone. As I said both the plug change and the change to open loop were done at the same time ( rookie error - 2 changes at once ). I will when I get chance put it back to adaptive and see what happens.

As I've got three maps available one could be MOT friendly.

Yes you can do that .. going richer just in the areas of the shunting in your normal driving map will ensure that you still spend a lot of time at lambda=1 and only richen things up when required. The cats should be fine at that.

Finally got round to some work.

Set AFR to 13.8 in the problem areas and a minimum of 14.0 elsewhere put it back in adaptive.

Now seems to be running fine but need more miles to really know.

Hope the 14.0 is OK for the cats. Is it possible to set up the map to get through MOT with all the cats out? This would also allow me to fit a nice Clive F
exhaust.

It may well be possible to map it to pass MOT emissions but I believe the rules say if the car was fitted with cats they must be there on inspection. Fitting an exhaust that clearly has no cats would be a fail.
