Rear Tyre Width?

I'm seeking a set of new tyres for my standard 16" TVR rear alloys. At present, I'm running 225/60/16/ZR SO3s.

Does anyone know if it is practical to run a 245/45/16/ZR SO3 on the standard rear alloys? If it is possible, what are the drawbacks, if any?

IIRC, 245/45ZR16 was the original size for 5 litre cars. 225/50ZR16 was for 4 litre cars? There's a page on it in "The Bible", but I can't find mine currently.....

245 will fit (as was factory fit on some models) but my experience is that 225 is the best width for those rims, the wider tyres seem to distort under heavy cornering. But you could just try a wider tyre and see how you get on with it? It isn't going to do anything disasterous.

I think the 245s are standard for the Estorils. The standard 5-spokes are probably designed for the 225s.

I thought the Chimaera 5 spoke rear was the same size as the Griffith rear. So wouldn't it be safe to assume that the 245 would fit on either without any difficulty.

I had 245's on the back of my old Griffith and they looked very comfortable on the rims and will be planning on putting the same on my Chimaera once the tread gets down a little more.

Just out of interest, there is a pair of brand new S-03's on Ebay at the moment, they look like they still have the wrappers on and they are 245's for the Griffith / Chimaera rears. i would have thought that the bidding war will be quite explosive....

Will be fun to see how much the price rises. If they go above the cost of 2 regular sized SO3s (inc P&P) I'll be bowing out.

Yep been doing it for years. I find it a lot better than the 225. Had both and swapped between them over a few days and the 245's offered better grip.

Yes, see shpub reply and Green for drawbacks. Note olso that 225/60 is an oddball size thrown on. 225/55/16 was standard (why not just stick to this?) and people usually switch to the 225/50/16 Griff fitting.

I ran these on my 93 400 for ages (well SO2 pp's but same principal) on the standard rims.. no problems at all

Need the 245 (and I really need even more) on 500 and up - less power i'd go 225 for more slidy fun.
