Picking up a tvr chimaera 400 in the next few weeks, i'm unaware of how to tell the difference between the two styles of gearbox and was wondering if anyone had some definite information on how to tell which one it has.
Many Thanks
Ethan

IIRC reverse is up and left on the older box, right and down under 5th in the T5.

This. LT77 (old) is up to the left and T5 (later) is down to the right.

Note to new owners of T5.
To get a clean engagement of reverse go into 5th first then down the gate into reverse.

Both good boxes.

Nothing to really panic about with either other than poor maintenance or usual age related wear.

I find youare better to use third then reverse as fifth is a weak link on the t5 so minimise the chances of wear on it. Works just as well as 5th on any crunching gear engagements. Owned t5 cars for 23 years now so now second nature

Wont make a blind bit of difference to 5th's integrity smile you are stalling a spinning/rotating shaft with no inertia or load , any forward gear will do

Engaging a particular gear will have some impact, given it’s a known issue and I’ve seen cars missing 5th, it’s just better to avoid it and learn another way
