Windscreen Wiper Spindle

Hi all.
In the last week the spindle that drives the passenger side wiper has decided to "lose" all of its teeth, and has got a nice smooth appearance. Yep - the wiper doesn't move anywhere!
I can only assume that somehow the nut worked itself slightly loose, letting the spindle turn without pushing the wiper arm, hence stripping what was left of the teeth.
Anyhow, I've read the bible, and searched the forums, but no-one has mentioned the possibility of getting to the spindle by drilling out the rivets on the black mesh grille just infornt of the windscreen, that the spindle is seated through.
Does anyone have experience of this? The bible suggests it is possible, but recommends the 'through-the-dashboard' method - any ideas why this is not the favoured access method?? Anyone got any hints?

I have exactly the same problem. 
Apparently, the best method is to remove the dash and access through the fibreglass. If you're lucky you will have an access hatch. If you're unlucky you will need a saw.
TMS has offered to fix mine for a mere £650. All but £30 (approx) of that is labour costs.
I think it must be one of the most aggravating problems to experience with a chim.

It is access from under the dash top only I'm afraid. Is an awkward and fiddly job but nothing technically 'difficult'... usual crude mackled together bitsa 'engineering' (using the term very loosely) in tight spaces we know and love. The gear boxes, which include the spindle, are Lucas parts but I've yet to find a more realistic source. The danger of using secondhand is that the teeth on the gear wheels may be worn in which case even if the splines work alright the drive cable may not mesh properly and you end up trading one problem for another just as annoying (ie where the wipers get out of synch).
