Delaminating Windscreen

I think it's about time to change the windscreen, it's all delaminated around the bottom corners. Just wondering if this is a job for your general high street windscreen fitter or does it need a specialist? Anybody had a new one fitted recently, if so how much?

How bad is the delamination... it's a fairly normal thing to happen on a TVR... a picture would help, as most of the time it's not worth worrying about; it's just a tad unsightly.

some people put a bit of black electricians tape across the bottom of the windscreen to hide it. Mine has done this a little, but I'm not going to the hassle of a new screen for it !

I'll get a picture and post it this aft (when I nick off work!)

I must admit it is still on the black bit of the screen and if I'm honest it is just cosmetic at the moment. Just seeing if I could get a ball park figure for the cost, if it's quite reasonable I'd get it done if not I'll live with it...

I believe it can be done by some fitting companies but its better to get a specialist to do it, especially as theres been a number of reports of screens not being properly fitted or the vinyl/leather on the dash being wrecked.
As for the de-lamination, it is possible to paint the glass with a very smooth black paint in order to hide this.

Shinny black vinyl from a printing/graphic/sign shop is perfect for the job.....

Sounds like a common TVR trait... live with it... don't worry about it... the next screen will do the same.

If you want it replaced "wait" for a stone to hit it, and then have it done.. but be prepared for the associated ball-ache....

I have done exactly this, and trimmed it with a very sharp knife, to the cover the delaminating perfectly, it really doesnt notice... well i forget about it now anyway.

Good idea zippee...I think I have a spray can of hammerite smooth in the garage...just wondering how well it would stick to glass

And who do you think the specialist uses, it is very unusal for them to do it themselves. They normally call in windscreen companies.

As regard to delaminating, this is a common problem, especially on early cars. TVR did at the latter part of it's life seal the edge of the windscreen to stop water ingress.

So if you get one fitted make sure that

a) they seal the bottom edge of the windscreen on both sides where it normally delaminates before bonding the windscreen. This normally stops the delamination which is caused by water ingress.
b) very important that straight after they have bonded the windscreen, that they put the roof on before the bond goes off. As there is flexibility in aperture, and it could set in the wrong place.

Hi Guys, had mine done first by a well known windscreen company who made a total balls up of it,[ cost them £1900 to rectify the damage to the trim and the ill fit of the screen] then Fernhurst rectified the mess and fitted a new screen at a cost to the insurance company of £595. They used an independant company to fit it, i've had qoutes from independant companies for around £350. i waited until a stone chipped it, but remember how irritating it was to look at my beautiful chim with a scruffy windscreen.

possibly a hijack to this thread and if you think it is I apologise and please delete it and I will list seperately but I am at an advanced stage of producing a batch of "Fineline" heated Griffith/Chimaera windscreens. These may not be too much more expensive than standard screens, and may in fact be cheaper depending on numbers ( between £200 and £ 250 per screen is envisaged) and an experienced fitting specialist in central UK could fit at extra cost.These will be produced in America so please dont expect it to happen in hours but autumn is evisaged, just in time for those chilly, mistedup screen evenings. please email any interest through my profile or discuss in forum sTeVeR

I've had mine booked in for a replacement screen with a local well known screen replacer for about six weeks now. It transpires that the reason for delay is not the windscreen but the seals. Spoke to TVR yesterday; windscreens available (£175), seals available from June 14th (1 x 3 metres of seal and 1 x 2 metres of lower seal, both types at approx £3 per metre.)

mmm interesting... Im currently in the Black insulation tape to hide it camp, but a heated screen might persuade me to change it
