Hello all.

Have there been any advances on sealing the sump, mines leaking again? Just looked back through old posts on this subject but couldn't find anything new.

Thanks

Seems to be as good as it gets for most , personally still on the cork gaskets but I bagged some new old stock British Leyland/LR ones and these work well thus far https://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/PBSCProduct.as...

If i do it again i would just use the above sealant with no gasket.
Ive had no luck with cork and that was taking care too.

I use the Wynns black gasket maker silicon RTV and not a drop showing.

Not a job I do myself, but Neil Garner's fitted this rubber gasket on both of my V8's several years ago and there have been no leaks since.

If using sealant on the mating surfaces it seems logical to clean them off with white spirit first to clean off all the oil residue to make sure the sealant adheres better.

Brake cleaner is better, less oily.

Hello Peter. My instinct tells me to go for a rubber gasket but I’m interested in the wynns gasket maker. How do you do it?

Make sure the sump flange is completely flat.
Scrape surfaces thoroughly with a Stanley blade.
Cleanup surfaces with brake cleaner and run a bead of the mastic out of the pressurised can all the way around the sump flange forming circles around each bolt hole.
You don’t need a huge amount but I guess a bead about a quarter of an inch wide maximum is enough.
It is best to have a couple of studs, one each side of the sump to help line it up when you offer the sump up to the engine.
I then screw all the bolts in, sort of hand tight and leave the gasket to go off.
Return some hours later and finally tighten. That stops all the product squeezing out.
Don’t forget to put a little of the silicon around the front two bolts as they go all the way through to the oil pump chamber in the front cover.
