Just wait till its had some time to bed in mate - it will truly blow you (and your neighbours) away with the constant pops and crackles

I have got to listen to this. Mine is a daily driver - do you think it may be a bit antisocial in town? On the other hand, do I care. And is it tolerable on the motorway?

Mine was in having a sevice, Clutch master/slave cylinder replaced, Exhaust sleeved, 2 new engine mounts, leaky sump gasket replaced & still needs to have shocks, discs and pads all round...

Should be perfect for Lemans

I am currently in the "Do I?" or "Don't I?" camp with this. Very tempted to get the exhaust mods done but don't want to end up with something that I don't like and having to pay to reverse the process (unlikely but possible).

Do you find that are that it is much louder on tickover and just driving slowly down the road (thinking about starting it in the garage and driving slowly away from the house), or does it only start to make a big difference as the revs start to rise?

Interesting to hear this Nuggs, so you find that the mod gets better with age?

And one last question. Know that diferent garages quote very different prices for what I believe is the same mod. Think that Fernies charge £200, Thames Valley Racing £170. How much is Austec charges for this bit of exhaust surgery, and are all the garages performing exactly the same procedure.

It's louder!

Obviously it's much louder at higher revs than it is at tickover, but it's still fairly bloody loud at idle/low revs.

Mine sounded good from the off, but it took a good month for the pipes to bed in and really start popping and banging

I understand that prices have gone up a bit since I had mine done, but should still come in cheaper than the other two quotes you mention. Give them a call on 01293 531080.

No, methods can differ. For example, IIRC Offords put in two cherry bombs in place of the existing (performated) pipework. Austec cut the existing pipework, rip out the baffles and then weld in solid (straight through) pipes.

Where are you based? I'm sure there will be a friendly PHer nearby with the mod, who would let you have a listen...

At the end of the day, it sounds awesome. You have to get it done

Having heard Gills (Rooster) chim that has had the Offords cherry bomb treatment I can safely say it sounds amazing. A real deep V8 bass, some (not all) of the straight through conversions, ie/ non cherry bomb, can sound a little tinny under power and I believe this is the reason Offords fit the cherry bombs instead.
Whichevr version you decide to go for just DO IT!!!
I'll be having mine done (via Offords) in July when it comes back from the bodyshop.

It sounds much more throaty at all revs. We had the wadding out and pipes sleeved with solid pipes. Didn't notice any power loss but we did have the Taraka upgrade at the same time.
Noise isn't that much different in the car with the roof off even on the motorway than pre mod although it is obviously a little louder. Most of the noise is at the back end.
Car is used daily and is great.
Pops and bangs are brilliant and really scare people.

Sorry for delay in responding my mod at Austec cost me £162.74 including the dreaded VAT. Sounds good at all speeds including tickover believe me you won't be dissapointed.
Nuggs can't tell you how good it is to hear it gets better as it beds in...can't wait.......

Was hoping someone might be able to guide me through exactly how to do the modification. I have the tools, welder, grinder etc. (and a small amount of skill) but want to know where to cut and any other tips that anyone has to offer to remove the baffles and put in a straight htrough pipe.

IIRC the exhaust is straight through already, just with a perforated pipe surrounded by sound deadening material.

I had the pipes removed from the box totally. Now it's just a big empty(noisy)thing.

At some stage during every exhaust mod post, somebody points out that the exhaust as standard is already a straight through system...... If an exhaust runs from the front of the car to the rear of the car with a silencer at some stage it is not a straight through system. It cant be straight through if it is running through perforated pipe, serounded by sound deadening material and encased in a steel shell.!! That is a silencer.!! If the perforated sections are replaced with non perforated pipes that will turn the exhaust into a straight through system.....i.e. the gases now travel from front to rear un-silenced. The difference in sound speaks for itself.

Oh, I thought straight through meant no interference from baffles or in some cases the pipe cut in two and welded to gether etc??
