Just got off the phone with the dealers. My Chim is in for its 4000rpm flat spot problem. Under investigation they have compression tested the cylinders and its down on one or more cylinders. Early suspects are the valves by all accounts, and it may be an engine in a box to Coventry job.

Its only 11 months old, and I didnt buy a Tamora on the basis of the supposed issue with Sp6 valves and this goes and bloody happens.

I've been in Vectraville for a week and it looks like I may be there for some time.

Still, even with this there is nothing I would have rather had for the last 8000 miles. Though I am starting to have thoughts about chopping in it for a Caterham Superlight R500 - please set me straight!

Matt.

Bad news Matt...

Very sorry to hear that, still, I know what you mean about the pleasure they bring!

Hope the car gets better soon...

Matt, that's bad news mate.

Just IN warranty though isn't it? Thank gawd for that!

Can't you get something better than a Vctra whilst it is away. I can understand you feeling a bit upset after reading of the Sp 6 probs and then having probs with the ultra-reliable Rover V8.

Keep your chin up and you're getting a Cerb next I thought – not one of those Caterham thingies.

Yeah, luckily in warranty by about 28 days! Bit pissed off about it but it the rough I have expected with all that smooth.

Thoughts of the Superlight have now been banished I just didnt want anything to do with TVR when I wrote that this morning.

All will be well soon I am sure.

Matt.

Please can we take note of real issue at hand...I wouldn't wish being sent to Coventry on anything, especially Nuneaton.

Poor old block, it may come back physically fit, but it will be mentally scarred for life.

After all, look what 4 years there did to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Seriously though, it looks like your large measure of good judement was sullied with a large dollop of bad luck.

Hope she's better soon,

Mouse

UPDATE:

Just called the dealers and the Factory arent responding to their request at the moment. Its losing compression across the entire nearside bank, has a horrible intermittent knocking sound and the clutch is slipping by all accounts. Choices for the warranty are apparently having the dealer do it, taking the engine out and shipping it to Coventry or sending the entire car back to Coventry to have them look at it.

Either way, going on estimates for Speed 6 rebuilds (apparently this is so rare on a Rover V8 no one knows) I will be without my pride and joy for 6-8 weeks

This means that I will have to attend BTaP in a sodding Vectra!

Time to hassle them for a stand-in TVR! The Vectra could put years onto you in the space of a few weeks!

OK I understand that an AJP would have to go back to TVR, but there are a hundred engine specialists up and down the country who could do the Rover V8, and most would do a better job than TVR Power while they're at it. I suppose the warranty locks you into a factory approved supplier (who are bound to be TVR power I guess) but they're by no means your only option. I'm sure that some dealers would even do the job in-house.

I'd see this as an opportunity to have the engine tuned...

If they've got it apart anyway... be RUDE not to take advantage!

Peter,

I think the factory are going to decide what to do, if they think it can be cured with a valve regrind then the dealer will do it, anything more and its off to Coventry I think is the general gist.

I am struggling to understand though what could possibly cause compression loss on an entire bank though! Strangely though it seems to be the slipping clutch thats perplexing them!

Can that be done as part of a warranty job? What options do I have on a 450?

Just a thought....maybe a single camshaft drive or timing problem? That could well affect one bank surely?

No idea if it can be done on a warranty job, or the options (sorry), but if you don't ask, you don't get!

Maybe someone like Joolz will have a better idea of what can be done...?

Sorry to hear about the car plotloss.
Having been in a similiar position I know its not good fun !

Just a quick note. Make sure there aren't going to be any hidden charges from the gargae if they remove your engine for shippage (I got caught on that one)... I'm sure being such a new car they'll do everything under warranty...but you never know.

Hope they do a quick job for you anyway and get you out of that Vectra !

Good luck !

I know how you feel being without the car Matt!!

Damn, its painful. Especially when its replaced by a Vectra. Still at least you can practise reverse flicks and handbrake turns.

On the way to Virginia Waters I drove through Chiswick to meet some of you guys meeting at All Bar One. I was running a little late so aborted mission and got back to the A4 when I got stuck in some traffic. I saw a green?(I think) Chimaera in Chiswick. Tried to have a quick look for some PH stickers but not enough time. Wasn't your car was it?

Nah not me, I met up with them but mine is a late dark blue one (enclosed lights, no stickers either though).

I've gotta say that although its an inanimate object I miss 'er outdoors like mad!

The most annoying thing though is in this damned Vectra I have to keep looking at the rev counter to check if the bloody thing is switched on!

Update 2!

Just got off the phone with the dealers, TVR Power apologise profusly (I cant spell!) by all accounts, they are coming to get it on Monday and it will be away for two weeks as opposed to the usual 6-8!!!

So it looks like I wont have to come to BTaP in a Vectra after all

It will need running in again though but I cant tell you all how relieved I am that its only going to take that long and I will have my P&J back much sooner than I thought.

Thank you for all the kind messages of empathy chaps, it really has helped.

Excellent. Am planning to drive up on the Saturday to the doo . . .thought via 'A' roads all the way . . .as the M4 is guaranteed to be shagged! Let's see if we can get West London to rumble up together!
