My mounts look rather old and the clearance from manifold to chassis is about 2mm on the drivers side and looks to be touching on the passenger side, from looking through old posts it sounds like this should be about 10mm, so how far do I need to jack the engine up to get these out and back in, I guess to put new ones in I will need to go higher? Do I remove the mount along with the bracket after undoing the 3 bolts that hold it to the engine?, final question is where to lift, some say sump, some on the bottom pulley, I don’t really like the sound of either of those ?

Bottom pulley worked for me, it's just a gentle lift. Sump gasket leak was something I didn't want to risk

Yes i was concerned about pressurising the sump gasket, and pushing up on the shaft didnt seem an ideal situation, it could be that it will be in this position for a week or 2 as i only get to work on it at the weekends
Any thoughts on how high and if the mount should come out alone or with the mounting bracket ?

But then again I want to replace the sump gasket anyway, so if I spread the load with some wood is that ok ??

i have the new mounts in, reading the older threads i see its recommended to drop the engine down and then tighten the nuts, if i do this i have about 10 clearance between the cats and the chassis on the drivers side but only 3mm on the passenger side, should i tighten the drivers side and then lift the passenger a bit before tightening as there is some adjustment available on the mounting bolts?

No rock the motor in the cradle to equalise the manifold clearance on both sides then tighten nuts fully

Ok, can I do this without taking weight of it first?

Did you find spacers fitted on the engine mounts? About 4-5mm thick? Some cars have them afaik. My Griffith had one on each side.

I had one on the drivers side only, from what I read that appears to be normal?, but if I had one both sides I guess it would even things up?, but what’s normal on a TVR

The story goes something like they added the spacer to the o/s mount not to raise the engine but because the chassis needed more spacial tolerance as even gigged up they were known to often be different sizes hehe
Probably dealer and home mechanics alike have added another spacer to indeed raise the engine slightly.

When replacing engine mounts I jacked engine up to as high a position as I dare off the pulley wheel which makes getting the mounts in easier, put all nuts and washers on once in place, lowered engine a few mm but still high, nipped everything up and released jack. Engine sits nice and high on both sides.
