Dumb question about fuel consumption!!!

First i need to thank all of you that pointed me in the right direction with my starting and uneven running problems....new engine heat sensor and optimax petrol and it runs like a dream!!!
I am in Newcastle and am going to worthing (south coast) approx 340 miles i have only just got the car and am wondering what the fuel consumption should be...a lad i work with has got a V8s and he rekons he can get 40mpg on a motorway????

Doesn't seem to make much difference what speed I do, mind you I cannot resist putting the foot down. One benefit of owning a TVR is I find it clears the ourside lane very effectively, so you can maintain a faster pace than in an anonymous car.
Unfortunately its only 15-16 on my slow commute to work, but hey, you get to wind the windows down and listen to the noise.

If I might suggest something...
Find out for yourself! Fill up as you leave and see how many miles you've done when you have to fill up. As a guideline - if you don't know your range do not attempt to go more than 250 miles on a tank and start looking for places to refill when you get to 200 miles. To be honest 250 miles is probably pprobably pushing it (although I have heard of people who can get more than that without any bother).

Careful cruising in my 400 I'll get (just) 200-230 miles from the tank but then thats pushing the needle right down. Something I don't like doing as the guages are so inaccurate. From full to qtr tank I usually get about 160-170 miles on a good run. Though I challenge you to try and complete a 340 mile drive (2 fill ups at least) and stay at a constant speed, driving econimically. In a car like this its very hard to do and I for one don't have the will-power to stop myself from using the loud pedal too much.
Crusing in my modified Griff 4.0 I once got 33mpg out of the car, mind you this was doing 70 odd pretty much constantly. I used to go from Newcastle (Heaton) to Surrey regularly in my 2.9 V6 S3 and I was getting there on about 1.5 tanks of petrol.
With the Griff at 80 - 98 you're looking at around 25mpg, I'd say for a 4.0

and keep all my petrol / mileage data on a spreadsheet. The data is also updated onto my PH profile for the car.
As you can see here the average fuel consumption of my 500 over 46 months / 15.7k miles is 18mpg and the median is closer to 17mpg.
Best tank average ever is 24mpg and worst is 14mpg

I treat the fuel gauge as a vague indicator at best. In fact, I've got so used to looking at the trip counter and not the fuel gauge that I recently ran out of fuel after being wrongfooted by the car doing a lot of idling at the garage, thus using up fuel at 0mpg.

..that would give you a theoretical speed of 180 mph at 5000 rpm. 
I'm not sure if you have the older or newer gearbox but your car will be either:
Newer BTR Diff has a final drive of 3.45 to 1, and the later BW T5 Box has a 5th gear ratio of 0.83 to 1, this would give 2863.5 rpm per 1000 wheel rpm. So multiplying it by .838* will give 2400 rpm at 60 MPH
Old GKN Diff has a final drive of 3.31 to 1, and the early LT77 Box has a 5th gear ratio of 0.83 to 1 in top. this would give 2747.3 engine rpm per 1000 wheel rpm. So multiplying it by .838* will give 2302 rpm at 60 MPH
*the wheel rolling circumference is apx 192cm. Accordingly 1609m (1mile)/1.92 = 838 revolutions per 1mile
