Fuel Gauge

I have bought a 94 Chim (such joy I never thought I could have with my pants on), but the fuel gauge is causing confusion, I can go from a quarter of a tank to empty, mearly by turning a corner, then 2 minutes later, as if by magic, we are back to a quarter tank, any ideas of how to combat this. The answer of only driving in a straight line is not the one I'm looking for!!!!

I think the answer you are looking for is "they all do that sir"

A good strategy on mine has been to find out exactly how much is in the tank at a quarter full indicated (straight and level). Best way is to fill up at this point and deduct the fuel amount from the tank capacity of 57 litres for the answer, which is ten litres in my case. That translates to 40 miles max.

Just get used to the fact that most of the instruments are there to make the dash look pretty, and serve little useful function! If you have enough time to look at them you are slacking anyway!

This used to do it on mine, So i took teh sender out to have a peep.
Basically a float is attached to a rod which has a contact on the end of it. This contact rise and drops along with fuel level over a series of wires(forget the proper name) mine had come away slightly hence you get the wild readings especially around corners. I just pushed teh contact closer to the wires, not too much though as it wouldnt move at all and possible bend this wires as they are very thin. Sorted
You can also bend teh wire with the float to get a better reading if its out compared to the guage.
If you cant be arsed with that, just set you trip every time you fill and go back every 200 miles
