5W/50 oil?

I need to top up the oil, went to two places yesterday and couldnt get hold of any 5w/50. nearest they had was 5w/40!!
Can i use this?
where can i get 5w/50?

I wouldn't worry too much about the '5W' bit at this time of year! It's the winter viscosity...a 10W50 oil will not cause any problems (indeed, favourite oil for the Griff/Chim engine seems to be Mobil 1 Motorsport 10W50 synthetic, anyway). If you have a particular brand of oil you want to stick to, mixing oils of slightly different viscosity ratings won't make make difference.

Using a 5W40 might lead to slightly increased consumption, and a 0W40 might be more prone to leaks/seepage and maybe a bit more tappet noise on startup as well, but a 10W50 should be no problem.

Hi - I'm no expert but I think your chosed grade is maybe a little thin for a Rover V8 - look up threads involving Opieoilman.

Opieoilman is recommending a 15w50 (Silkolene I believe is his chosen brand

Hopefully not but the additives in the different makes of oil can cancel each other out so best to avoid if possible.
