valve noise

hi all
on a 4.0 is it normal that you get a slight tapperty noise on light throttle,say when cruising or is it a case that they all do it.its not clicking or a constant cam noise,or under good acc i hear it more with the roof down .btw i use 5/40.any thoughts greatly appreciated

I'm hearing exactly the same thing, at first I thought it might be a nailhead or stone in a tyre!

Its not gotten any louder in 6000 miles in 3 months, so I've stopped worrying about it for now.

Worn cams start sounding like this but can carry on for eons before it gets serious. Check all your manifold bolts are tight (well worth investing in an 'S' shaped 9/16" ring spanner for this as you wont get em all otherwise)

yeah i must get pickies on once i work out how to.it could be the cam but you cant hear it when you poke round the engine or rev with the bonnet open,just on a steady light thottle and the exhaust not that loud,and engine warmed up, but not all the time,maybe nothing to worry about yet?

Sounds very similar to what I get...

I get it mainly when I'm cruising on the motorway at steady revs, around 3000, It'll start clicking.

I was thinking it could be oil starvation to the top end of the engine, but I think I'll start by checking the manifold bolts. Anyone know off hand what the torque should be for them? or is it mentioned in the bible?

Might this also be symptomatic of exhaust manifold gaskets being on the way out?

Probably just a lazy tappet. I had one and it sounded awful while accelerating in tunnels but I had her serviced by Austec (it was that bad they could heard me pulling up from their reception area) and they put some cleaner additive in the oil and now she is all quiet up there again. Usually cause by lack of use of the car

Sorry, don't know, all I know is is was a oil additive they put in with the oil change. The tappets have been good and gold since.
