Anti stone chip film

A couple of months back someone posted about what I think was a new ICI film developed to protect against stone chips and they said that a kit for a Chimaera was being worked on. Does anyone know it has happened, if it's any good and how much it costs?

The Chimaera design is being completed and should be available from the 7Th
of June for fitting we do have an installer in the Enfield area and North
London although it can be fitted at dealers and customer locations where
suitable facilities exist.
The price for the standard pack for a Chimaera would be about £500 installed
this would typically cover the frontal areas (clam etc) and the Wing mirrors
as well as one or two areas that may emerge from the design process but
which I cannot comment on until the design is completed.

I ended up geting mine done by Armourfend www.armourfend.com
As far as I can tell they use the same 3M type of film and it cost just over £400 inc fitting and VAT for all the front end inc wheel arches and sill etc
I'm very impressed with the results so far.
Can't fault them, excellent customer service and fitters were superb, it took around an hour and a half.

Is it just like a clear plastic film?
My father in law just bought a Yaris (good car and he is over 80)and it has something like this around the front of the wheel arches which are obviously vunerable to stone damage. Just wondered if it was the same stuff
It's simmilar to the stuff on a yaris but it is a lot less visable (it might be a bit thinner). The yaris I've seen you can see it on there from a distance where as on my car you have to look fairly closely to see where it is. I'm really pleased I had it done.

BEWARE!! The new film that is now available is a lot better than Armourfend (which I had on my Cerby). It also covers a larger area of the front of the car as well as other key areas that are prone to stone chipping (inclusing the door mirrors). The contact details are as follows: Paint Shield 08458 902090. They also do headlight kits as well which are worthwhile going for as they use a thicker film!! I was also quoted around £500 for a Chim, but that was to be professionally fitted at their site in Enfield! Am goinmg to get mine done in a week or so will let you know what it is like!!

Please do Cerby - I'm currently getting quotes to get my Chim done - but am concerned about the ugly lines mid-bonnet.

I'm really interested in how the material differs as both armourfend and paintshield both claim to use 'scotchgard paint protection film' made by 3M and both carry identical logo's on their literature.
The coverage may be an issue as I could only get details of what was covered from armourfend.
Price wise they are going to be simmilar, as I only got the front end done, by the time the mirrors, doors, rear wheel arches and bumper are done they come out about the same fitted inc vat.
I was the first Griff to be done by Paintshield. I had to work with the designers who designed, cut and fitted the product up in Grantham (long day mind).
I was also concerned about the line mid way up the front end so I asked if they could get the line to coincide with the natural line on the front.
Done about 4 weeks ago and looks good.
No issues with polish gathering at the edge of the film as the car is white (ish).
There are two thicknesses of film - one for the body work generally and a thicker film for lights and vulnerable areas.
Paintshield are approved by TVR (Armourfend were never approved). I didn't go with Armourfend as I have heard they cut the film on the car whioch was a definate no no.
Great service from Tom, Ann and the team and even offered to buy me fish and chips for lunch, but I had sani's and I need to lose a few pounds.

hmmm, my chim of course doesn't have a natural line on the front - you're not trying to convert me into a hairy chested griff owner are you??

Quick Report on today's fitting - I went for the 'full monty' - front apron, bonnet, lower (curved) door/side panels, mirror fronts and am very pleased with the result!
I'm within a short blast of the Paintshield head office in Grantham, so booked in there for this afternoon - they do have other franchised outlets around the country (and the world!!) and they explained to me the training that the franchisees' fitters go through before being let loose our cars - seems pretty comprehensive.
The fitting itself was very thorough - they took their time and made sure the fit was spot on. The staff were very friendly and very careful with my car.
The film panels are all individually designed (not mirror imaged LHS to RHS) - thus ensuring a good fit on my asymmetric Chimaera (and I'm told they all are sir!).
The film edge gaps are also better than any other fittings I've seen (I've been a bit of a film spotter at recent events!) 1-2 mm from the edges and hidden into panel lines where possible. All in all, a pretty unobtrusive fitting I feel.
One word of warning - they have to degrease the car before application, removing the carefully applied autoglym - don't polish your car before taking it in - and you can't wash the car for 7 days after, to allow the film to cure - so don't do it just before an event!!
Overall, I'm very pleased and don't give recommendations lightly, but am happy to recommend Paintshield - good service, good product, excellent fitting and competitive price - contact me via profile for more info.

Softtop - if your are badly chippped, then a respray would be a good idea (alternatively if your engine is badly chipped, go & see Mark Adams!
) - mine had only a couple of chips, which I used touch-up on beforehand - one is still visible on close inspection, but hey, there won't be any more!

Just to clarify this one, the films used by Armafend and Paintshield are identical, it is the panel designs, pricing models (fixed price / hourly costings for fittings) and customer service that are the differentiators between the two companies.
