Anyone,

Right, picked up my copy of sprint this morning for the train journey and noticed in one section that the running reports about a Chimaera 500 - talking about oil coolers. The writer indicated that Chimaeras dont have oil coolers....

However, and this is where my mechanical knowledge runs out, I think mine has! I have the relevant braided hoses going from the engine to in front of the radiator. And when doing some previous work on the grill (damn those things) I noticed a large can sized object mounted in there with the hoses connected - to my limited technical knowledge this looks like an oil cooler.... Its on the other side to the air filter....

Am I wrong or could mine have one fitted? If so what benefit does it give the engine? I do have upraded brakes but these hoses are separate and plainly for the brakes....

Can anyone help me with this??? Or am i just daft...? Answers on a post card..

Cheers

Paul

Most oil coolers look like a mini radiator and work in the same way.The pipes sound right but I don't think the cooler would be can shaped.

Yes but the pipes to this are only 12mm, ie not oil pipes, unless someone has "upgraded" them

Think Trefor's right – see thread about the thing's location ... and Paul's is the early layout like mine and Trefor's.

Could be a dry sump system ... have you been filling the oil through the rocker cover filler cap 'cos the dipstick shows no oil.

Only joking.

It may be an Oil / Water cooler. You can qucikly tell by seeing if it has 4 hoses going into / coming out of it. (Oil in, oil out, water in, water out).

Jas.

P.S. They work by using the water to warm the oil quickly and then limiting (as far as possible) the maximum oil temperature to that of the water, i.e around 100 degrees or so maximum.
