idle propblem 4.5ltr 1997

Hi, after starting and driving a short distance the idle drops to almost a stall but picks up slowly, somtimes the engine stalls, restarting clears the problem but it can happen again after awhile again restarting cures. I have cleaned the stepper motor, the car has been serviced not long ago. Any help! Thanks.

I had exactly the same problem about 2 months ago, it happened shortly after cleaning the stepper motor. I cleaned it again, being particularly picky this time and was careful how I replaced it. This seemed to improve the situation.

I then bought a set of Magnecor ignition leads which completely cured any idling problems and I haven't looked back since.

You might want to look at your spark plug extensions and make sure they are clean as well.

Hi,it could be that the air flow meter is slightly loose.If you leave the car on tickover lift the bonnet and move the plug around to see if it influences the tickover,if it does that could be your problem.Cheers

Stepper motor

AND BE CAREFUL when you tighten it up - finger tight then a "nadge" on the spanner - NO MORE! Bit of PTFE tape helps. I know the dangers - I snapped mine (£60) from landy supplies).

Next - leads or leaky/duff vacuum advance tube (tube from plenum to dizzy)? Mine came off and had similar symptoms,
