inner wing heat shield replacment
Discussion
I'll be replacing my old manifolds with a set of the ACT performance manifolds soon.
The inner wing heat shields are in pretty poor shape, so wanted to check if it is possible to replace these while the manifolds are off? had a look last night and it does look a bit tricky getting to lower rivets on each side. any tricks to this or is it considered an engine out job?

Tight as a judge I’d expect! It’s all down to getting both a mastic gun and rivet gun down there so I’d start with trying a rivet gun first. Drilling out old rivets might be the hardest task but maybe possible with right angled drill and short piece.
I’m sure this info will be very valuable for others as most heat matting is now old and in need of replacement.
I don't think you will do the job properly with the engine in. In fact you have to be careful refitting a body as the chassis top rail can rip the heat matt as the body goes on.
I have seen new heat matt just glued over the old stuff. Not pretty but surprised me how secure it was when I tried to remove it.
From the other perspective when replacing the heat matt on another car I found that in an area where the matt had long since departed the resin of the inner wing had obviously at some time caught fire and leaving only the glass strands over an area about 4 inches square. This had also burnt the carpet underlay and singed the back of the carpet. A very close call the owner knew nothing about or even if it happened before he owned it.
So if it is in bad nick it needs replacing rather than ignoring.

10 years ago I used this using the original spec heat shield and it’s still stuck solid, I did the transmission tunnel as well whilst the body was off, no lifting or peeling anywhere, just make sure surface is clean and dry, no greasy deposits.
