 4L Chim P Reg

and on the way back. Some long hard fast running  But at some point you have to slow down and stop. Revs would then drop to tickover, then surge to 1500 rpm, then drop again and so on up and down for a minute or so. Sometimes revs would stick at 1500 for about 30 - 60 secs. Engine was at top end of hot, but in limits. Back in cooler climes it is still doing it , but much less pronounced. Before I start checking all the ECU inputs, throttle pot and misc sensors, does anyone have any bright ideas as to what is happening? :scratchchin: Otherwise car ran superbly, two up fully laden.

Cheers

Jeff

I'd say that sounds like the classic 'clean the stepper motor'.

I had a similar problem (random revving up to 2000rpm and down to near stall, but also random dieing but restarting just fine) - dealer eventually traced it back to dirty/corroded connectors to the ECU.

Something to do with water dripping down the loom and collecting in the plug. A good clean and a resite of the ECU and (fingers crossed) no more problems.

Jonathant - tks for that. I did try disconnecting/re-connecting the ECU to see if it would clear the prob - connections seemed clean and in good order but another close inspection makes sense.
