Under hard acceleration, occasionally at about 4/5000 RPM my 5 litre Chimaera makes a ‘tinkly / rattley’ noise.
Oil levels and pressures are fine and she pulls cleanly from low revs in 5th.
Any ideas?

what fuel are you using? could be that the engine is pinking.
She's full of 98. But it does sound a but like pinking.
sounds to me as if it maybe pinking, pinking is more prone to happen when the engine is hot and as the temp has been pretty darned hot recently. Probably needs the ignition timing adjusting, I would recomend a rolling road session to get things tip top.
These cars are prone to outlet manifold leaks. Early stages can sound very similar to pinking.
So, if its any of the problems that you guys have kindly listed, should I not drive her until I've visited a dealer?

Dav, I thing I am getting the same thing around 4500 - 5000 rpm. It is a metalic sound right? I also fill it up with Shell's finest, but I still think it is pinking. I am booked in for a timing chack. Till then I try to stay clear of the 4500 mark.
Yep, metallic is how I would describe it. I’m very nervous about engine noises (being a ‘newbe’ TVR driver).
She certainly wasn’t misbehaving before the hot weather, so maybe that has had an effect (as suggested by rpulley). Yesterday evening the fan was working overtime!
Mine’s a 5 litre. Is yours a 5 as well?

Pinking will be heavily dependant on throttle, and stop if you ease off. Exhaust manifold gasket blow just gets quieter. Neither are good news, but exhaust manifold blow is not going to lead to severe damage whereas pinking could in extreme cases.
Is this the sort of thing a trusted mechanic could look at or do I need to take it to a TVR specialist?

These particular problems are all low tech stuff. I do recommend you use a TVR specialist for servicing generally though, because there are gotchas that a generic mechanic just won't know about.
