Anybody know if the polarity for the electrical connectors on the carbon canister matter? Its for the purge valve on the cannister

Its for a chimaera and there does not seem to be any indication of a + or - terminal!

Many thanks
Alex

From memory the connection on my V8S is handed and will only fit one way. But the connectors on the Chim may be different?

I have two wire ends so no connector to help me!

What are you trying to connect the wires to? Do you have the right plug, and if so what does it look like?

I am trying to connect to the spade type contacts on the purge valve. The wires don't have a plug/connector on them as the wiring got a bit messed up when I was grafting a new front end on!

I don't know anything about TVR's.

If you really do have only two wires and you are trying to connect them to a potentiometer, with only two connections, it doesn't matter which way around they go.

A potentiometer can either be used as a divider or a variable resistor. There would normally be three connections.

The center connection cannot be interchanged with the end ones.

If the potentiometer is logarithmic, then you can't interchange the end connections.

If the pot is beng used as a variable resistor (rather than a divider) then you only need two connections, which would be a middle connection and one of the ends.

It's a solenoid, so it might well work either way round but on the other hand it might have some electronics inside; connecting it the wrong way round *might* blow it up.

I guess the "carbon pot" is someting else!

If it's a solenoid, it'll likely have a diode to protect the transistor that is driving the solenoid (if it is a transistor).

This may or may not be located with the solenoid. If the diode is with the solenoid, or there are other electronics with the solenoid (as V8S suggests), there is a good chance that something will go bang.

If I've understood it correctly, we're talking about the purge valve for the carbon cannister. The purge valve connects the carbon cannister to the engine plenum under the control of the ECU. It's a little doohicky about three inches long and two inches in diameter, with a 10mm hose in and out, and an electrical connector to operate it. Internally it uses a solenoid to open and close the valve.

I've got one in the garage, but I guess you can get at yours just as well. Unfortunately the rest of the car is a hundred miles away so I can't tell you what the wiring is like. But if you know what colour wires you've got I could see if they feature on the wiring diagram?

I think hes talking about the later one that clips directly on to the cannister. I've got both variants, if you let me know which one you want the connections for I'll have a gander. The connectors are the fiddly junior timer type - not common spades AFAIK. If you have one with spade connectors, its probably off another car (purge valve is just a simple device & available on 50% cars in the scrapyard - if you can find it...)

Many thanks for the replys.

Its the purge valve on the top of the carbon canister. The purge valve has two electrical spade connectors. The valve itself is in a plastic moulding and clips onto the top of the cannister. Just wondering if there is a + or - terminal.

The carbon cannister is used on the cat cars. The valve just seems to be a vent from the tank/plenum.

Many thanks
Alex
