Any Experience with Alpine Speakers ???

I realise that there are few sounds beter than a rumbling V8, but on those long dull motorway journeys its good to have some musical accompanient.

I fitted a Pioneer head unit (very smart looking) and upgraded the front speakers to JBL. It sounds pretty good when the engine is off, but when you're doing 70 on the motorway the mid range and bass drops off.

Someone has recommended fitting a couple of Alpine speakers in the rear. Does anyone have any experience? And can they recommend them?

If you put speakers in the rear, without using a HPF on the fronts you're going to suffer a reduction in bass, not a reinforcement.

Thanks for that. I think the head unit has a built-in HPF. Would you recommend setting it at 50hz or 80hz?

I have 6 x 9 Alpines fitted in the rear. Extremely happy with them. Carl Baker fitted them. I'm not sure what Parrot of Doom means in his post, but I certainly dont get a reduction in bass.

low frequency audio in such a confined space, coming from 4 sources, will almost certainly result in wave cancellation.

Its ok if your front speakers are filtered so that they don't output any bass, but if you're running all 4 full-range speakers at once, with no HPF, you will reduce the amount of bass in the car. Its simple acoustics.





I'd set the HPF at whatever sounds better for you

I have done a few "installs" and the only time Bass was reduced was when speakers were "out of phase". Wiring, TVR, say no more !

not sure about all the techno stuff already mentioned but when i got my chim it had 4 alpine speakers in and i can recommend them but i suppose it will depend on which type, size, model, etc....only thing is i never have the 'ice' on, to busy listening to the sounds from outside the car!

How good do when they sound when you are cruising along the motorway doing 69mph + ?? I would have thought with the road noise and the engine that most of the sound gets drowned out (thats my current problem?).

Well, they can certainly generate plenty enough sound to overcome the roar. But....my eardrums only can cope with the volume level for short periods.

I would say they are ideal for A-road cruising up to 60 or so. Then they are the business. You seem to get a step-change in wind roar noise when you it 70+.

It improves if you drive with the windows up (ie with the top down), but that destroys the image!!
